I'll entertain this thread very briefly:

  There is some discussion of Samba/NT performance on the SVLUG list
along with how you can "fool" NT into thinking that Samba is really an
NT box and thus get NT perform at the normal rate.  No, I don't recall
the particulars or any key words.  Sorry.  The best I do recall is
that it had to do with setting something to "fast" and then the Samba
boxen appeared in NT's finder/browser as NT boxes and not Samba/other.
