&gt; However, you don't get anything for free, and though the descriptions are
&gt; better than many hand-crafted ones you'll find, they seem to be inferior
&gt; to what a decent writer could produce. My (current) opinion
&gt; is that a well written snapshot in time is more pleasing to
&gt; play in than a more technically correct system that changes, but can never
&gt; be fine prose.

While I certainly will not make a claim toward "fine prose," I have coded up
a system that can handle changing room conditions without seeming machine
generated (at lease not too badly). It is too much to include here, but you
can access it all at:

&lt;URL: <A  HREF="http://web.missouri.edu/~ens017/code/">http://web.missouri.edu/~ens017/code/</A> &gt;

Those of you who have a copy of MSVC++ should be able to get it working
fairly quickly, and I imagine that porting it to you favorite flavor of UNIX
should be easy also. Feel free to use it however you want, convert it to C,
use it as an example of bad commenting style, etc. :) This is fresh code,
so I have not had time to get rid of all the hacks I used. Sorry. :)

Sample output of the above program (prompts for input, redundant output
cut):
--- start ---

Covered with frost, the cobblestones paving the streets look worn.
Years of use have cracked them and dug long ruts filled with drifted snow.
The gutters contain a few piles of interesting looking trinkets.
Just to the west is an inn, its sign shows a lady in a gown and jewels
prancing over the words "The Dancing Queen." It looks in good repair
overall, clean and neat, but without an air of being exclusive to the
nobility. The front steps and common room look empty, most patrons waiting
for better weather and a later hour to get a drink.

Cracked, dry and covered in a fine brown dust, the cobblestones paving
the streets look worn. Years of use have cracked them and dug long ruts
filled with dust and pebbles. The gutters are swept clean of debris.
Dim against the morning sky, flickering iron lamps placed along the
street push back the shadows.
Just to the west is an inn, its sign shows a lady in a gown and jewels
prancing over the words "The Dancing Queen." The inn's shutters are closed
tight, however, light peeks from a few of the second story windows. It
looks in good repair overall, clean and neat, but without an air of being
exclusive to the nobility.

Slickened and streaked with a thin brown mud, the cobblestones paving
the streets look worn. Years of use have cracked them and dug long ruts
filled with dirty rainwater and rotting garbage. The gutters are clogged
and overflowing with interesting looking trinkets.
Casting their light onto the dark streets, flickering iron lamps placed
along the street refract in the falling rain. The pools of yellow light are
too far apart to truly illuminate the street, instead forming bright islands
a stone's throw apart.
Just to the west is an inn, "The Dancing Queen." The inn's shutters are
closed tight against the weather. It looks in good repair overall, clean
and neat, but without an air of being exclusive to the nobility.

Awash with mud and refuse, the cobblestones paving the streets look
worn. Years of use have cracked them and dug long ruts filled with dirty
rainwater and rotting garbage. The gutters are swept clean of debris,
allowing the runoff to flow freely.
Dim against the evening sky, flickering iron lamps placed along the
street refract in the falling rain.

prancing over the words "The Dancing Queen." It looks in good repair
overall, clean and neat, but without an air of being exclusive to the
nobility. A good bustle spills from the common room, patrons rushing in and
out, trying to stay dry.

Silence is worth a thousand words :P
