> > I've always considered "PvP" to mean players competing with other players.
> > This would be not only direct PK, but also "race" situations like acquiring
> > unique items before others do, "vanity" situations like trying to break the
> > record at the in-game gambling casino, or "territorial" situations like
> > claiming choice areas on the MUD. You could also include theft,
> > trap-laying, destruction of property, and rumormongering. "PvP" has never,
> > ever, ever meant the same as "PK" to me.
>
> Matt said much the same thing, and I agree in both cases, however I would
> qualify this stuff as 2nd degree PvP. Attempting to kill or steal
> from someone can always be considered a direct assault on someone's
> character. Running for political office might be ("My arch-rival is
> running for that office? Than I shall, too!") but need not be. (They
> might not even know that someone else was running for that office.)

Hmm. Indirect PvP, yeah. How would you classify groups of players vs.
groups of players though? For instance, our city-states have militaries
that they can march around, claiming land with ( must be contiguous),
fighting each other's armies, and so on (an individual player attacking a
division of any size would die very quickly and without inflicting any
real losses upon the division). I would say that this is direct PvP, but
it doesn't involve player vs. player combat (except insofar as you might
try to whack out those giving the orders).
