I don't think this is totaly true. Most muds which are successful are definately different to stock muds. They had a style or idea of their own which makes them successful. In some cases it might be as simple as the theme, in others it would be a more complicated relation between theme and things like skills/races/eye catching. By far and away the biggest draw of people to a mud is word of mouth. Once people have heard of your mud, more people start coming, which causes even more people to come. And so it goes on. I think being different and oddball at the start is actually a catcher, rather than something which turns people off. Glowing in the dark, David. _______________________________________________ MUD-Dev maillist - MUD-Dev#kanga,nu <A HREF="http://www.kanga.nu/lists/listinfo/mud-dev">http://www.kanga.nu/lists/listinfo/mud-dev</A> </PRE> <!--X-Body-of-Message-End--> <!--X-MsgBody-End--> <!--X-Follow-Ups--> <HR> <ul compact><li><strong>Follow-Ups</strong>: <ul> <li><strong><A NAME="00476" HREF="msg00476.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong> <ul compact><li><em>From:</em> J C Lawrence <claw#kanga,nu></li></ul> <li><strong><A NAME="00442" HREF="msg00442.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong> <ul compact><li><em>From:</em> Martin Keegan <martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au></li></ul> </UL></LI></UL> <!--X-Follow-Ups-End--> <!--X-References--> <UL><LI><STRONG>References</STRONG>: <UL> <LI><STRONG><A NAME="00439" HREF="msg00439.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></STRONG> <UL><LI><EM>From:</EM> Martin Keegan <martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au></LI></UL></LI> </UL></LI></UL> <!--X-References-End--> <!--X-BotPNI--> <UL> <LI>Prev by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00439.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by Date: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00441.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] IMPORTANT ADMIN: New list setup requires your attention</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Prev by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00439.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Next by thread: <STRONG><A HREF="msg00442.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></STRONG> </LI> <LI>Index(es): <UL> <LI><A HREF="index.html#00440"><STRONG>Date</STRONG></A></LI> <LI><A HREF="thread.html#00440"><STRONG>Thread</STRONG></A></LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> <!--X-BotPNI-End--> <!--X-User-Footer--> <!--X-User-Footer-End--> <ul><li>Thread context: <BLOCKQUOTE><UL> <LI><STRONG>Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</STRONG>, <EM>(continued)</EM> <ul compact> <LI><strong><A NAME="00479" HREF="msg00479.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, Mik Clarke <a href="mailto:mikclrk#ibm,net">mikclrk#ibm,net</a>, Sat 20 Feb 1999, 21:09 GMT </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00431" HREF="msg00431.html">[MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, ##Make Nylander <a href="mailto:thenewt#use,usit.net">thenewt#use,usit.net</a>, Tue 16 Feb 1999, 17:34 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00435" HREF="msg00435.html">[MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, diablo <a href="mailto:diablo#best,com">diablo#best,com</a>, Tue 16 Feb 1999, 21:39 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00439" HREF="msg00439.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, Martin Keegan <a href="mailto:martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au">martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au</a>, Thu 18 Feb 1999, 02:47 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00440" HREF="msg00440.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, David Bennett <a href="mailto:ddt#discworld,imaginary.com">ddt#discworld,imaginary.com</a>, Thu 18 Feb 1999, 02:59 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00442" HREF="msg00442.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, Martin Keegan <a href="mailto:martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au">martin#camelot,cyburbia.net.au</a>, Thu 18 Feb 1999, 03:29 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00443" HREF="msg00443.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, Andy Cink <a href="mailto:ranthor#earthlink,net">ranthor#earthlink,net</a>, Thu 18 Feb 1999, 03:59 GMT </LI> </UL> </LI> <LI><strong><A NAME="00476" HREF="msg00476.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, J C Lawrence <a href="mailto:claw#kanga,nu">claw#kanga,nu</a>, Sat 20 Feb 1999, 06:16 GMT <UL> <LI><strong><A NAME="00488" HREF="msg00488.html">Re: [MUD-Dev] Re: State of the art?</A></strong>, David Bennett <a href="mailto:ddt#discworld,imaginary.com">ddt#discworld,imaginary.com</a>, Mon 22 Feb 1999, 19:03 GMT </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </UL> </LI> </ul> </LI> </UL></BLOCKQUOTE> </ul> <hr> <center> [ <a href="../">Other Periods</a> | <a href="../../">Other mailing lists</a> | <a href="/search.php3">Search</a> ] </center> <hr> </body> </html>
