Taking a close look at the parchment you see all kinds of symbols and words
that just don't make any sense to you at all.  You think that maybe if you
were to recite them something wonderful might happen, cause you get the
feeling they may be a spell of some sort.  Down near the bottom of the scrap
there is a passage that has what looks to be a translation written
underneath it.  It says: In the world there are many forces, among some of
the more powerful of these forces are Order and Chaos.  Order stagnates and
kills itself, while Chaos destroys with randomness till all is gone.  Both
are dead-ends in and of themselves, but when joined the can create new and
wonderful things.

Entrance to the Vale~

Exiting the arch you walk into a large vale full of lush trees.  You can
hear birds singing and creatures roaming around between the trees.  A small
trail leads off to the east towards what looks to be a large fortress
astride a small pass.  Ahead of you the vale continues in it's full splendor
and behind you the arch leads back to the path.  A large sign is posted on
one of the trees and demands your attention.

Along the East Wall~
~

Here on the west side of the vale tree grow everywhere.  Small shrubs
abound.  All you can see around you is browns and greens.  All around you
you can here the sounds of the local wildlife, you even manage to catch a
glimpse of a deer as it bounds back deeper into the vale.  To the south a
small trail can been seen leading in an east-west direction.

Along the East Wall~

Here in the vale all is peaceful, the trees provide pleasant shade and
the slight sounds of the forest creatures provide a gentle background.  All
around you life grows and flourishes, it's amazing that being this close to
the city no one has managed to destroy this wonderful glade.  It makes you
think maybe that sign had something important written on it.

NorthEast corner of the Vale~

Here in the northwest corner of the vale the growth is tremendous.  To
your north and west huge trees with massive trunks form a barrier that is
filled in only by the underbrush.  You most definately cannot make your way
through them.  Over to the east you can see one tree rising high above all
the rest.  In the distance you can hear a bird call as it flys off looking
for food.

SouthWest corner of the vale~

Here in the southwest corner of the glade the underbrush grows even
thicker than back from the way you came.  Looking around you can see signs
that someone has been here before you, a number of half formed footprints
are left imprinted in the damp earth.  Off to the east you can hear a small
stream gurgling pleasantly away.  You think you see a trail through the
underbrush to the west.

Following a small game trail~

You follow a small game trail to the east.  Looking ahead you can see it
widens even more as it approaches the large fortress.  On either side of you

Moving eastwards into the vale the growth continues, it's a veritable
forest in here.  On all sides trees abound.  Off to your right you hear a
branch snap, but when you turn to see what caused it there's nothing in
sight.  Over to the east you can see the top of the big tree that rises
above all the rest.

A small stream~

As you continue to move eastwards deeper into the vale the trees part
slightly and a small clearing becomes apparent.  In the middle of the
clearing a small stream runs through.  Looking around you can see that
whichever direction you choose to take will once again take you back into

Deeper into the vale~

Every now and again you catch a glimpse of some animal or person flitting
from tree to tree.  You definately have the feeling that your movements in
the vale are closely watched.  Off to the south and east you can still see
the great tree that rises above all the rest.

The south side of the vale~

Here on the south side of the vale the growth is the same as most
everywhere else.  You way south is blocked by intesive undergrowth and trees
that grow so close their trunks almost touch.  Off to the north the sounds

inhabit the vale.

Following the road east~

towards the ever present fortress.  Looking a bit more closely at the
fortress from you new vantage point you can see a pair of large gates
located at the entrance standing slightly ajar.  Off to either side of the
gates huge cliffs rise straight up into the air.

The HUGE tree~

As you continue to walk thru the vale the trees part a little and you
come upon a small glade dominated by probably the biggest tree you've ever
seen.  Taking a look around you notice that there seems to be a noticeable
lack of any creatures around here.  Upon closer examination of the tree you
see a small trapdoor right above your head.

The path~

Here on the eastern side of the vale all the normal things you've been
seeing once again burst forth.  Trees are as plentiful as dirt and shrubs
even more so.  You see a small form fly by at great speed and fail to
identify it before it gets lost in the foilage of a tree.  Off to your east
the ground becomes rocky and almost mountainous, lacking any trees and all
but a few scrawny shrubs.  To the north the path turns into a road and
continues towards the fortress.

NorthEast corner of the vale~

Here in this corner of the vale a number of creatures are moving amongst
the trunks of the trees.  Upon your arrival they scatter to the other parts
of the vale.  Looking to the north more large trees and large quantities of
underbrush form an impassible barrie.  While to the east a huge cliff rises
up towards the heavens and it's sheer face offers you no purchase for
climbing.

Here in the corner of the vale it is like the rest of the vale, trees
tower above you all around.  To your east a great cliff rises up blocking
any movement in that direction.  In the southern direction large trees,
undrebrush and dead branches abound, effectively blocking off that direction
as well.  Though from behind all the underbrush and branches you seem to
hear a low rumbling noise.

The road contiues eastwards towards the fortress.  Looking up ahead you
can see what looks to be a pair of guards standing on either side of the
gates, but you can't tell what they're doing, they're just too far away.

the cliffs block all passage entirely.

Here on the side of the road there is a definite lack of greenery. 
Mostly rocks and sand are all that thrive here except for the single shrub
that has attached itself to the cliffwall and seems to eek out a pathetic
existance.  To both the north and the east the walls of the cliffs rise up
blocking any progress in those two directions.

South side of the road~

The south side of the road looks alot like the north side of the road,
though there is no shrub here eeking out an existance.  A small lizard does
make itself known though by scurrying out of your way as you clamber over the
rocks.  To the east and south the faces of the cliffs rise up sheer as glass
preventing any progress in those directions.

In the pass~

As you continue eastwards the cliffs seem to hem you into a small pass. 
Looking up you can see there is no chance of climbing the sheer faces of the
cliffs and decide the only direction you can continue on is fowards. 
Looking ahead you can see the fortress rising up almost as high as the
cliff, at the gates the two guards stand around idly looking bored.

You stand directly before the slightly ajar gates to the fortress. 
Looking beyond them, you can see a courtyard bustling with activity.  You
can go east or west from here.

A walkway among the branches~

What this?  Having managed to open the trapdoor and fly up through it you
find yourself on some sort of walkway in and among the branches of this
spectacular tree.  You wonder who built this and for what purpose it serves.
Looking around you see the walkway continues eastwards following the trunk
of the tree.

Following the walkway~

You follow the walkway around the tree's girth and marvel at the
spectacular view you're afforded of the vale below you.  While looking
around you notice a large crossbow mounted to the railing on the walkway,
seems that whoever built it didn't use it just for a nice view.  The walkway
continues even farther around the tree to the north.

A dead end~

All of a sudden the walkway just terminates directly into the trunk of
the tree.  You continue to look around but can't see any signs of trapdoors
or anything, maybe the thing just ends here.  But for some reason you've
got this funny feeling that there's more to this tree than just this
walkway.

Aha!  There was a small trapdoor above the walkway and you found it! 
Looking around you find yourself in a small room with a window set in one
wall and a table below the window.  To the south an archway leads into yet

A smallish bedroom~
~
~
Passing through the archway you find yourself in a small bedroom.  Up
against one wall is a matress lieing on the floor, while over in the corner
a chest covered with dust rests.  While the room is a bit dusty and has the
air of having not been used for quite a while, it is still basically tidy. 
The archway north goes back to the room you just left.

A secret room~

Aha!  After finding the secret door and getting past it you find
yourself in a little room that was probably inteded to be kept secret. 
Looking around you see many chipped and used weapons along with a few sets
of very worn and dented armor.  But the thing that draws your attention is
the small chest in the middle of the room.  Taking a closer look at it you
can see it's closed and locked, but have no idea where the key may be.

A damp, dark cave~

After moving all the branches out of the way you reveal the opening to a
very dark and very damp cave.  You try to peer farther in but you just can't
penetrate the darkness.  As you move around you can hear an occasional
crunch as you step on something dry and brittle, you're not sure you want to
know exactly what it was.

Further along in the cave~

Moving farther along in the cave it actually gets even darker than before
if that's possible.  The only light you have to rely on is the one you carry
with you, and even that only sheds enough light to keep you from tripping
over yourself.  From the south a deep rumbling noise can be heard, dare you
go there and see what it is?

You woke up the huge bear!~
~
~
As you creep along the cave the rumbling noise gets louder.  Rounding the
corner you see a very large bear sleeping comfortably against one wall.  But
as your light starts to shed it's glow the bear wakes up and is none to
happy about it.  It leaps to the attack seeing you as the creature that woke
up it's comfortable sleep.

The killing zone~
~
~
Passing through the gates you enter into a small section of the wall
between the gates and the porticullis.  This is the area that the defenders
of the fortress can use as a fallback position and to kill many attackers in
the process.  Looking up you can see the hole in the ceiling where the
boiling oil or pitch is usually poured down on the unsuspecting beseigers,
just looking at it gives you the chills and makes you want to move past this
place as fast as possible.

Entrance into the courtyard~

You exit that small section between the walls with a feeling of relief. 
Passing the porticullis you step into a small cobbled way that leads towards
the courtyard.  Looking to the east you can see it open up before you. 
While to the south laughter floats out of a slightly open door leading to a
room that looks as if it belongs to the guards.

The guardsroom~

~
Here at the entrance to the guard's quarters there are no bunks set up. 
Looking around you see a multitude of weapons and armor stacked up against
the walls.  This must be where all the spare equipment is stored when not in
use.  When you walked in the guards that were playing cards at the small
table and laughing ceased all such merriment so as to stare at you.  It
makes you feel kind of uneasy, maybe you're not welcome here.

The guard's quarters~
~
~
Moving past the guards at the poker game you tread farther into the set
of rooms that the guards consider their one safe haven.  Looking around the
new room you see a number of bunks and cots in various states of use and
abuse.  While you inspect the room a couple of very young looking guards
inspect you with the same intensity.

The guard's quarters~

Passing by the two young guards you move into a new room that looks much
like the last one.  But where the last room had unkempt bunks and equipment
strewn around, this area is kept very clean.  The bunks are all made and the
equipment is all stored in it's proper places.  Sitting on a pair of bunks
working on some equipment is a pair of grizzled veterans of the guard.  To
the south an unadorned closed door decorates the wall.

The courtyard~

~
The courtyard opens up before you.  Here traders, artisans, children,
housewives and even an occasional noble mix and mingle in a chaotic
mish-mash of humanity.  Guards around the courtyard keep a careful watch on
everything. Up ahead of you a fountain spays water into the air.  Exits 
lead in the four cardinal directions.

The courtyard~
~
~
Wander around the courtyard looking at the different people that pass you 
by.  It seems that here in the courtyard anyone at all can mix and mingle 
with anyone else from the fortress with little or no thought for any 
social rank.  Nobles talk and haggle with traders while guards instead of
shooing beggars away give them a small coin or two.  Farther north is the
entrance to what looks to be a small alcove, while to the east, you can
hear the sounds of a smithy hammering away.

The courtyard~

~
You continue to wander around the courtyard taking in the sights and
smells that assault you senses.  A mangy mongrel runs up and sniffs at your
boots and wags it's tail at you looking pathetic.  Off to the east you can
hear the sounds of horses, while south is the entrance to the tavern. 
Laughter and singing can be heard floating from the open doorway.

An alcove~
~
~
You enter a small darkened alcove that lies off the northern edge of the
courtyard.  It's a bit darker in here that the rest of the courtyar and a
pitiful beggar sits here and begs you for money.  To the west and north the
walls of the courtyard rise up providing protectin from an evident but
unseen threat, while to the east the wall of the smithy stands tall.

Tavern of the Sun~
~
~
As you enther the tavern you are immediately assaulted by the staggering
volume of people laughing and singing.  All around people are drinking and
having a good time.  Looking around, you think you spot a table in the back,
maybe if you're quick you can grab it.  Sammual, the keeper of the tavern,
is behind the bar, while the serving girls rush about madly trying to fill
orders.

A fountain~
~
~
This is the center of the courtyard.  Situated here is a large fountain. 
In the middle of the fountain is a statue of a man riding a tall charger
with an upraised sword.  Around the fountain are a number of benches that
you can take a seat on and rest for a while.  To the north lies the smithy,
the south is the tavern and the stables, while the east is the entrance to
the fortress itself.  And back west is the entrance to the courtyard.

The courtyard~

You continue to wander around the courtyard taking in the sights and

The courtyard~

The crowd thins here a little as you approach the stables which are just
a bit farther ahead.  South of you a small cul-de-sac is formed by the walls
of the fortress, the tavern and the stables.  Up to the north you can hear
the sounds of running water as the fountain continues to spray water into
the air.

The smithy~
~
~
As you enter the smithy the sound of metal on metal grows noticably
louder.  The heat flowing from the back of the building is almost enough to
drive you back out into the street.  Looking around you can see a number of
weapons and armors lining the walls, all for sale you assume.  Over by the
anvil being assisted by a number of apprentices is Asgorn, the Smithy.  Over
the din of the hammering he yells that he'll be with you in just a moment.

A Cul-de-sac~

~
You enter a small cul-de-sac off the main street in the courtyard.  Walls
bound you on the east, west and south side.  As you enter the cul-de-sac you
immediately notice it's much darker in here than it is back out in the main
part of the courtyard.  Taking a look around you think you see a shadow make
a quick movement just as a knife plunges at you from the darkness.

Before the fortress~

You stand here before the grand gates of the fortress and wonder what
purpose it serves.  Why did someone build it, and why was it built astride
this pass?  What does it guard against?  Or maybe it's a convient place to

The only way to know is to enter it and find out.

The stables~

Moving foward you come upon the entrance to the stables.  Probably the
most tell-tale sign that you've found them would be the stench.  Josaph, the
stable master, stands around here watching people go by.  He doesn't look
like he's actually doing anything at all and you wonder why he's in charge.

A small niche~

You have entered a small niche formed from the walls of the fortress

The stables~

You've entered the stable for whatever twisted reason.  The stench is 
almost overwhelming, it seems the place hasn't had a good cleaning in a 
number of days.  A couple of horses are here, their tails swatting at the 
flies that are swarming all over the place.

The Gate~

~
You stumble into a small area lit by a torch on the wall.  Looking around
you notice two guards looking at you supiciously.  You also notice a very
large gate bound by chains with an even larger lock keeping the chains in
place and the gate from opening.  You guess that for whatever reason, this
gate is not meant to be opened on a daily basis.  Though you do wonder what
might be on the other side of it, yet another mystery in need of solving.

The captain's room~
~
~
Upon entering this room it is very apparent that it doesn't belong to any
common guadsman.  Taking a quick look around you see a very used and
slightly cluttered desk, a small bookshelf, and a chair behind the desk. 
Sitting in the chair is Zand, the captain of the guard and also the champion
of the fortress.  He looks you over then pierces you with his gaze and asks
why you have disturbed him.

Entrance to the Fortress~

You have entered the fortress proper, at first glance all you can see is
the long hallway stretching before you.  But as you take a second glance and
look around you more you begin to notice a few things.  Like to either side
of you a darkened alcove sits.  Also that the place isn't as dark as you
first believe, torches line the walls on either side.  Down at the far end
of the hall you can make out a pair of huge oak double doors.

A darkened alcove~

You enter a small alcove off to the side of the main corridor.  At first
you can't see anything at all because the alcove has no source of light, but

The main hallway~

You continue down the hallway towards the great double doors at the end. 
A plush red carpet precedes you down the entire length of the hallway.  Off
to the north and the south side passages break off from the main one.  To
the north you can hear much hustle and bustle, while to the south the faint
sounds of praying can be heard.

A side corridor~

You turn off from the main hallway into this small side corridor. 
Looking ahead you can see that it runs straight for a bit then takes a sharp
turn to the right.  One thing you notice right away is that this corridor is
nowhere near the beautiful condition that the main hallway is, there's no
red carpet and the torches lining the walls are barely adequate to light the
place.

You continue along the corridor and after observing the number of
servants coming and going through it you deduce this must be the hall to
their private quarters.  The corridor take a sharp turn here and continues

You continue down the servant's hall.  Off to either side of you there
are small alcoves leading to what you suspect are the rooms that are

A servant's room~
~
~
Stepping thru one of the alcoves you exit the hall and enter a small,
plainly furnished room.  There are a number of cots set up against the walls
with a chest at the foot of each one.  A small torch burns fitfully on the
wall barely providing enough illumination to see by.  All in all this is a
boring place.

A servant's room~

You exit the hall and walk thru the archway into probably one of the most
boring rooms you've ever seen.  A few cots line the wall with a chest located
at the foot of each.  You see a woman sleeping in one of the cots, while a
man stares up at you indignantly for invading his privacy.

End of the hallway~

Squire James' room~
~
~
Upon entering this room you can immediately tell it is of a much better
quality that the previous rooms you've inspected here in the servants
quarters.  Looking around you can see a bed with an ornate chest located at
it's end.  Also a desk sits against the wall with a slight man located in
the chair behind it.  He appeared to be talking to the servant standing in
front of the desk, but upon your arrival he looks up and demands to know
what you are doing here.

A storage room~

Entering this room it is immediately apparant it is a storage room. 
Shelves line the walls on all sides and are almost overflowing with any

A small side passage~

A small chapel~

You continue further into the chapel taking a good look around.  All you
can see about you at the moment is pews, pews and more pews.  Here and there

You continue deeper into the chapel.  Before you stands a large and
robust man in some ornate robes of some kind, obviously the priest.  He
continues his praying not even noticing that you have arrived.  A large

subdued lighting here.

A small chapel~

You've made it to the far corner of the chapel.  A few pews are scattered
around the area with a person or two kneeling and praying to their god.  Off

Entrance to the stairwell~

You've come to the end of the small hallway.  A stone wall blocks any
progress to the south.  But a stairwell marked with runes leads upwards into
darkness.  You can sense that the stairs lead to a place where great magic
is performed, you can feel the effects of the magic in your very bones.  You
wonder if it would be such a great idea to go disturb the practioner.

In the stairwell~

You open the door and enter a room that is pure chaos.  Books and scrolls

Unlike the rest of the workshop this area is relatively clean of clutter.
But the one thing that does catch your attention is the giant glowing
pentagram enscribed on the floor.  And in that pentagram waits a large
salivating demon.  It looks at you with hungry eyes and leaps to the attack,
planning to make you it's next meal.  Evidently the mage didn't make his
pentagram perfect enough for the demon's tastes.

The mage~
~
~
The mage himself stands here among a clutter of magical implements, most
looking as if they have been exhausted.  He continues to mumble something
about demons and pentagrams but most of it is under his breath and you can't
make it out.  He looks up as he hears your steps and immediately upon seeing
you screams the word DEMON and tells you to run while you can.

The mage's treasure trove!~

Unlink the mage's workshop this room is very neat and very organized. 
The walls are lined with a number of shelves that contain many book and
scrolls and parchments that look as if they've all been well taken care of. 
A few other items are locate on the shelves and some may even be magical. 
In the middle of the floor lies a pile of coins, probably the mages
retirement fund.

The main hallway~

Continuing down the hall you see a number of pictures lining the wall,
many depict major battles that evidently the Lord of this place took part
in.  Each has a date listed below it and the proceed in chronological order.
The very last picture is a strange one though, it depicts this very fortress
straddling the pass.  Over the fortress a black sky reigns and lightning
bolts burst forth to strike some of the towers.  Among the black clouds some
very vague shapes can be seen as if the painter wanted the viewer to almost
see a mind behind the storm.  Under the painting the plaque showing the
dates has the starting date, but no finishing date.  The hall continues
foward.

The main hallway~

You continue foward down the hall, following the plush red carpet leading
up to the double doors ahead of you.  Looking ahead you can see the massive
doors are closed.  A pair of guards stand sentry on either side of the doors
watching your progress.

Before the double doors~

Whew!  You've made it to the doors after traversing the long hallway. 
The guards stand on either side of the doors looking you over from head to
toe.  Their eyes stop for a moment on your weapons and they get a dangerous
glint to them.  The doors are closed so you cannot see what is beyond them.

The entrance to the throne room~

Passing thru the doors you enter the great throne room belonging to the
Lord of the fortress.  Up ahead of you you can see the Lord seated in his
throne and discussing something with his Lady.  All around you servants
scurry about taking care of the needs of the few nobles walking around. 
Over in a corner an ambassador from a foreign land has cornered a Baron and
is grilling him looking to form an alliance.

The throne room~

A number of banners decorate this wall here.  Under each banner is a
small plaque telling from what clan/enemy the banner was taken, along with
when and where the battle occured.  A servant scurries up and asks you if
you wish for any refreshment while you study the various trophies.

The throne room~

~
You continue to wander around the throne room taking in the number
pictures hanging on the walls.  Here in this corner a number of portraits
hang.  From the dress and stature of each portrait you would assume they
were the previous Lords here.  Under each portrait hangs a small plaque
giving the name of the person and the dates of their rule.

The throne room~

In this corner of the throne room a small pedestal stands.  It is
illuminated by a small glowing light the hovers in mid-air and resist all
attempts to budge.  On the pedestal an unrolled parchment rests under glass.
Taking a look at the parchment you can see it's the original deed to the
land upon which this fortress is situated on.

The throne room~
~
~
You stand before the steps leading up to the throne.  Looking up you can
get a better look at the man who calls himself Lord of this place.  He is a
large man bearing a scar down the side of his face.  He wears a dark armor
and an open-faced helm wreathed in shadows.  At his side a short sword is
sheathed yet gives off a low hum.  Seated in a throne that is slighter
smaller but similiar to the Lord's the Lady of the Fortress sits and watches
as the commotion you have caused in her court.

The throne room~
~
~
Over in this corner you see a Baron has been cornered by an ambassador
from a strange land.  Looking the pair over you find the ambassador the more
interesting of the two.  The baron looks much like any other pompous
nobleman of the land, but the stanger has some interesting weapons and
armor.  You wonder if you could maybe engage him in a conversation on the
differences between the weapons here and from where he comes from?

The great throne~
~
~
You stand directly before the great throne.  Sitting in the throne is the
Lord of the Fortress.  Directly next to the throne rests a small one upon
which the Lady of the Fortress has seated herself.  As you stand there
before the rulers of this place they look you over taking in everything
about you.  You feel as if they're reading your lifes history just by
glancing at you.

South of the city~

~
Walking past the gates you enter a wooded area.  All around you trees
thrust up into the air reaching for the sun.  You can hear the sounds of
many of the local wildlife rooting around in the trees looking for lunch or
maybe looking for each other to make the other lunch.  The path continues to
the south.

Following the path~

You continue your walk down the path.  Looking around you can see the
forest thickening.  Taking a closer look at the path you can see many
footprints all headed south but none going back the other way.  You wonder
what thats all about.  Back to the north you can still make out the gate
leading to the city, while to the south you can see the path continuing.  
There is also a well-travelled path leading eastwards from here...

An arch of trees~

Large piles of lumber line the path here, as a previously hidden road
stretches south.  Gazing southward, you hear the sounds of people talking
and see what appear to be small huts.  To the east an archway made of trees
stands giving you a view of a beautiful wooded vale.  The trees have grown
so thick, they almost blot out the sun

A Path along the City Walls~

This well-travelled path leads eastwards, winding between the southern forest
and the mighty walls of Methidoral. Althought the path is rather hidden, it has
seen many travellers coming and going.

This small room is where Derk spends his time working.  Piled along the
walls can be seen many items of ancient origin that have managed to capture
his attention throughout the ages.  At the moment though his entire
