Beek's newsreader available for TMI-2 mudlibs Beek's newsreader has been installed here at TMI-2, and three initial newsgroups have been created. To use the newsreader, go west from the start room into the admin building, and type "paper" to get the TMI-2 News. Type "help paper" for directions. The interface is similar to that of rn. The newspaper is autoloading so you'll only have to get one once: if you want to get rid of it, you'll have to dest it. The three initial groups are news.groups, for discussing the creating of new groups; code.available, for announcing releases of new code, and code.questions, for questions about coding that are too involved for the question channel and don't fit handily on any board. I hope we'll be able to form new groups to suit people's interests: post on news.groups and tell us what you'd like to see. Also, anyone interested in writing their own newsreading program to interact with the news daemon is welcome to do so: studying Beek's rn.c object (in /std) would be the place to start. There is also some discussion of creating an Intermud news exchange protocol, and some people are already at work at that. Go nuts, have fun with it. Many thanks to Beek for providing his code. Those who wish to use the newsreader on their own TMI-2 muds will need five files: /adm/daemons/news_server.c, /std/rn.c, /obj/paper.c, cmds/adm/_newsadm.c, and /include/newsreader.h. Be advised that Beek's code carries certain copyright restrictions which are included in the headers of rn.c and news_server.c: please obey those restrictions if you use this code.
