If you get to the position of having more than a few hundred players online, you'll want to be thinking very seriously about distributed servers, most machines couldn't cope with that sort of overhead (granted, some very pumped SMP/ram-by-the-excavation-load superbeasts can), and/or setting a cap limit on the maximum your machine seems to cope with (obtained through trial and error), with some sort of login-time limit for existing players (think BBS). Even not using a thread for each player, you'll still be processing a vast amount of information, and doing vast amounts of work, which would floor you anyway. :) -- Regards, -Matt Chatterley Spod: http://user.super.net.uk/~neddy/spod/spod.html

References:

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??

From: J C Lawrence <claw#under,engr.sgi.com>

Prev by Date: Re: [MUD-Dev] Character development [was Re: ]

Next by Date: Re: [MUD-Dev] Parlez vous NPC?

Prev by thread: Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??

Next by thread: Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??

Index(es):

Date

Thread

Thread context:

Another recruit for the list?, (continued)

Another recruit for the list?, Joel Dillon emily#cornholio,new.ox.ac.uk, Sun 22 Mar 1998, 15:29 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Mon 23 Mar 1998, 20:38 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, Joel Dillon emily#cornholio,new.ox.ac.uk, Tue 24 Mar 1998, 08:16 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, J C Lawrence claw#under,engr.sgi.com, Wed 25 Mar 1998, 00:17 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, Matt Chatterley matt#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Wed 25 Mar 1998, 08:17 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, Ben Greear greear#cyberhighway,net, Sun 22 Mar 1998, 20:00 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] World Persistence, flat files v/s DB v/s ??, Jon A.
