I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the smaug codebase and When I start the mud it shuts down because can not find the area.lst but i know it is there i was wondering if it could be looking in the wrong place for it or where do i look to see its destination location?

You need to start the game from the area folder, or use the startup script.
Or edit the source to properly find the area.lst no matter what dir you boot the executable from, if you want a long-term fix :) I'm still not sure why (most) Diku's have held onto needing to boot from ../area due to poor code :(
or just modify the startup script to cd ../area first and then run the startup sequence. There are tons of codes that do this in the repository so just look around and you'll find an example. I just moved all of my source codes to my external hard drive which I left at home so I can't look for an example at this moment, but maybe someone here has an example that can show you how to do this.
