Ahem not to be out done by the python/ruby crowd, here is a list of existing Java/JVM based muds:

PAIN - http://pain.sourceforge.net/
CoffeeMud - http://www.zimmers.net/home/mud/
GroovyMud - http://code.google.com/p/groovymud/
JaMud - http://sourceforge.net/projects/jamud/
VerminMud - http://code.google.com/p/verminmud/
lulu-jmud - http://code.google.com/p/lulu-jmud/
flexmud - http://code.google.com/p/flexmud/
jriver - http://sourceforge.net/projects/jriver/

Actually there's probably more, but all the others look too immature to be listed here.

lies, jruby doesnt have a ruby 1.9 version yet, and also lots of ruby gems used by mud engines aren't supported by jruby.
