The astr pointer is an invalid pointer. You'd need to get more information like the backtrace for this to be debuggable. Try running your program in gdb. Another good thing to try would be to run the code in valgrind to identify when the pointer goes bad.

How would you start your MUD by hand, without using the startup script? e.g. which directory would you go to and what would you type? That is what you should do to run valgrind. The above output is indicating that it can't find the files it expects to find.
