Has anyone considered looking to the BBS world and implementing alternative protocols..
like AVATAR?

I think Smaug supports RIP images, but I don't know of any clients that support it.
AVATAR's main utility seems to be to conserve bandwidth, which isn't that big of an issue nowadays.
As far as I know the average BBS doesn't support any special protocols.
One odd little thing I ran across some weeks ago is
FANSI
.
