I came across this just today and think its worth a look. Ulteo Virtual Desktop as it looks pretty neat. It takes the same route as Andlinux does tho looks much more modern and will work on Vista which could be a bonus for those who have that as their OS.

Also of note is the Ulteo Online Desktop which looks to be linux that runs in a web browser. I do not know exactly what features it comes with, but just seems to me like a cool idea.

I have not tried either of these just yet, but am currently downloading Ulteo Virtual Desktop to install and try, if i get brave i might do a side by side comparison with Andlinux. Shudder. Oh i should mention that this project is run by Gael Duval of Mandrake fame, so it is potentially top knotch.

I could not get it to run on my machine because of a network conflict and i dont have time to reconfigure the network to test it out right now. I need to find another machine to test this on.

I am running Vista on this computer and have had no problems with AndLinux at all.

That Ulteo does look interesting.

unfortunately it doesn't have developer utility support yet. if that means what i think it does then it is useless for coding. how sad… i'll have to wait to try it out.

I know AndLinux does.

I had read about AndLinux here, and saw that TbaMUD released a cut down version of their code. I was able to download and install AndLinux, ran Synaptic to get the gcc files and dependancies, wget the TbaMUD source and have the MUD up and running in under two hours. I was rather impressed, as my past bouts with Cygwin were usually a frustrating affair. This was on Vista, and I had absolutely no problems at all.

Your mileage may vary.

i might just give AndLinux a try, it doesn't have all those annoying extra utilities that are completely un-needed for mud development like cygwin does, does it?

Well yes, it is a full blown linux distribution. It isn't designed for mud development and neither is cygwin. You can customize the installation to some extent considering it includes the synaptic package manager though. Just make sure you get the utilities that you need.
