meh, I don't think so much dead, but it's towards the end of the summer. Things have been pretty hectic on my end, but I still check the forums every day.

Top 10 Reasons Posts have been Slow:

1) You were all just so damn good at answering questions that every problem in the MUDding world has been solved!
2) Since Samson quit actively developing we all lost our will to code (kidding Samson!).
3) We took a hint from our player's script-bots, and installed patches that install other patches automatically.
4) The last free MUD server just filled up with error logs and no new accounts (needing help) can be opened.
5) The Y2K bug finally hit and took out all the servers.
6) A moderator went on a banning spree while drunk, and only those that understand code are left.
7) Some jackass stole the MUDBytes code and 10,000 stock forums with the same name have been set up using it.
8) Somehow all the new posts are being sent through a dead IMC2 server into the void.
9) We are all to busy playing each other's MUDs to post.
10) We have no current questions to start topics about, so we await a post about no posts being posted. Then we post.

Granted, 10 stinks, but I needed a "10" and I was tired.

;)

the mudbytes code is more or less freely available IIRC

If you think mudbytes is dead, look at smaugfuss. I do say they both provide a great service yet
to any who need things from them. Its just discussion is really slow.

My list was meant as a joke. I am not a comedian, but I try.

If somebody plays a humor role somewhere, doesn't that make them a comedian … so then we have a comedian playing a comedian?

I think it's more dormant, than dead.

Dormant would be the word I'd use for it. It's August. This happens every year. I don't know why anyone is surprised by it. Things are going to slow to a crawl until about October or so like they always do.

Summer's ending, Schools going back into session, people are going on their last trips for the summer, etc. I expected things to slow down. >.>

Doom and gloom, the MUD world is ending, it is the end of all things! We should start a blog wherein we question straight away why the community is meeting this dire fate…

Heh. David, I'm sure you know I already posted an entry on my own blog about that very issue and I doubt I need to tell anyone since I still get regular emails through there from people disappointed to hear that I've closed up shop for the most part.

I know your doing mods for Oblivion right now, but have you considered joining an open source project. I have been considering putting in an application to Planeshift MMORPG for a while now, but for some reason or another have not ever got there.

There are boundless projects out there in different states of playability that would see your skill set as an asset to their projects. As much as i love muds and have enjoyed doing and learning all the things that i have, there will come a time when i move on to different things where there are people and players to enjoy the effort that i put in.

Actually Samson I didn't have your post in mind (was it the one from a while ago?) – I was thinking about another, from somebody in less of a connected/informed position…

It's not a post here btw, it's one over on my blog from back in May. I guess I haven't seen the one from this other less connected person or I'd have some idea of what you're hinting at :)

@The_Fury: No, I haven't considered joining up with an open source project. I looked at the one you linked to and while it does look interesting, I'd hesitate to join up with anyone still using the GPL. My open source license preference is solidly in favor of BSD or BSD-like conditions. I'm only stuck with GPL on QSF, QSFP, and PDNS-Admin because that's what they all started out with.

Somewhat of an irony I guess. Since I do prefer to use free or open programs when the alternative exists. Like Open Office, etc. I'm also fully aware this puts me in a minority. I'm fine with that :)

Ah, so you were referring to the one from a while ago that I read. I was talking about a blog advertised on this site; I'll say no more lest I be accused of pointing fingers.

As for open source projects, it's true that if one does not get along with the GPL, the number of available projects is pretty limited. I have mixed feelings about the GPL. On the one hand, it protects the people who put their own time into the project; on the other hand, it is somewhat invasive with regards to how people can use the code with other projects.

Finger pointing is okay with me, I'll accuse myself of it…

Damn you Kayle, quit pointing fingers at Zenn.
