You're in France? That's a new one on me..

I grew up there, but now I'm in California (but when I graduate in March I'll be moving to NYC for my job).

I didn't know.. but it's interesting, I'll bet life growing up in France is pretty different from life was for those of us who grew up here in the states…

Dragona tells me that popcorn here is about $5 for the small tub, so it does sound like you've got us beat even if only slightly.

Oh, the tub thingies here are about $5 too. I was talking about like the smallest size they have, the little sleeve thingies.

They don't sell those sleeve thingies of popcorn out here anymore, so the small tub is the smallest you can get here …but we're also in a fairly rural area too. *shrug*

Lord, I don't know why we're still going on with this, but if you're creating new users on a *nix variant that often that it's no longer painless and starting to account for real quantities of your time, maybe you should consider going professional and admitting that you're dealing with corporate IT rather than running a small free host..

Well, you'd certainly make more money that way…

And the comparison to shipping wasn't meant to mean the amount of time spent is the same, it was an analogy of the usage of the word "free".

Um, the analogy got lost in translation because the argument is still that if you're paying anything at all it's no longer free rather than the specific semantics of what is free.

But we agreed that the computer was free even if you had to pay for shipping, right? Well, I also agree with you that this whole 'free' thing is getting less interesting… so how about we start a motion to talk about making money off of sys-adminning instead.

Well, between just you and I, I'm all for it, sys admin'ing in general is far more interesting to me, but I can't speak for anyone else here and it sure looks like at least a few folks are really dead-set on driving this thread until the rest of us say "fine, you're right, now go away already" just to shut them up. There's only so much beating that will have any effect once the horse is dead and reduced to glue…

That right there is the main thing, as Zeno just stated, creating a new user on a *nix variant takes close to the same amount of time as it took me to type this post. (About 20-30 seconds or less)

Do it over and over and over and over again and maybe you won't find it so painless.

If you're doing it over and over, then at $5 a setup (taking around 1min per setup) you're making $300 an hour. "Free"? I think not.

Zeno, I think you took the "over and over" bit a little too literally…

Yeah, it was pretty different. I won't say better because I don't think it's in my capacity to judge such things. Still, I learned a lot from it, for whatever that is worth. On the other hand, I have no idea what life is like for the 9-18 year olds in the USA, since I spent that time elsewhere. So US high schools are fairly foreign to me.

Oh, that's a bummer. The tubs are way too much for me. Heck, I even split the sleeve one with my girlfriend. (It's a lot cheaper that way too.)

Conner said:
If you're really doing it that much, you could script it so that you could actually manage 6 setups per minute, then you'd potentially be making $1800 an hour.

Woot! Sounds like we have a business plan! Set up free hosting with $5 setup fees, get 6 setups a minute straight for an hour, and make $1800 an hour! What are we waiting for?

Fair enough, I can say the same about life for 9-18 year olds in France.

Hey, as long as she's good with it.
For me, on those rare occassions when we bother with the theater anymore (with all the kids, it's rediculous trying to take ina new movie), we do dinner right before the movie so we don't have to buy popcorn or candy or soda or such while we're in there.

 Sounds great to me, now how do we convince th bank to finance us despite the fact that we've not addressed how we're getting all these tiny hosting accounts? (We need 360 per server right?)

Hey, as long as she's good with it.

It's a pretty good deal: she tends to eat less than me, so I tend to get 2/3 of whatever split we make.

Ya, we usually do dinner beforehand to not pay for the ridiculously overpriced food at the theaters. We tend to bring our own soda in bottles, which is a lot cheaper, too.

Uhh…

1) Business plan with $1800 an hour
2) …
3) Profit!!

Do you think that'll fly? :) The rest is just "details" after all.

We've brought our own snacks before, but I haven't tried sneaking bottled soda in yet.

Um, aside from just how far off-topic we've gotten, I don't think most financial institutions would accept just that as a full business plan.

What's worse is I'm 18 and in the US and also don't understand most American 9-18 year olds.

Sadly, that's relatively understandable enough too.. just wait til you have your own kids that age, you'll have even more trouble understanding them.

Dear Administrator, if you are going to cut apart threads of topics that have lost their usefulness and seriousness, please pick better topics than "18yos in france?". Either that, or cut the thread into appropriate subthreads: you might notice that we have all kinds of threads going on here, and 18yos is just one. Thanks. This was all pretty silly.

Given that my last two posts wondering about deleting/moving posts have been deleted, I'm wondering how long the above is going to last. What's next, a forum ban? :surprised: Nameless administrator, please at least charge me with a crime before burning my posts at the stake.

If post #6124 and #6125 were yours, then they died before even I saw what they were.

That being said, let's not decay this into a fight. Ask your question again.

I know it wasn't you, Samson. It had to do with a disagreement as to whether or not a certain topic had maintained its seriousness to the point of justifying moderator intervention in the face of off-and-on-topic silliness. There isn't really much of a question to be repeated, as I made my point publicly and later in private, and it seems that in the end of the day there is simply a disagreement. It really isn't a big deal for me: in fact, my point has been that the whole issue was light-hearted to begin with. Certainly not worth a fight.

Ok, in that case I won't dredge the two posts in question up from my RSS feed which did catch them before deletion..
