Hello,

I am thinking the duo ad banners for free is awesome concept. Perhaps You could add a smaller add rotation too on both sides that is random as well. Like 2 under recent uploads, and 2 under recent pots. I think that would be sweet.

People already have to re-make their banners to fit our unusual size, don't really need them making two ;). Also, yesterday the banners where rotated about 5200 times, so I think they're getting plenty of exposure. I'll think about adding a similar modlet like our affiliates to the other side, but I think I already have plans for that. But it's a definite maybe!

Please give people a switch in their profile to turn off all the banners.

they were gone through that may times, cause when you upload a new one to see what it looks like on the background, after it is approved, you have to sit there refreshing until yours shows up… We were doing that most of the day yesterday… Sorry Davion for running your count up so high :(

I like the banners up on the top, but they only change when you refresh… maybe they could be made into a scroll bar, so that they are constantly changing on the page… As for Vlaadar's idea, it sounds cool, but I think the pages are already sortof crowded…

Vladaar: While I certainly wouldn't mind throwing together another banner of another size to fit for that, until the site gets a lot more muds listed, we're already getting a lot of exposure as is.

Davion: Once again, how does one become an affiliate?

Tyche: Wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

Affilliation… wow. There are many people who want to become an affiliate of MudBytes :S. I think on the chopping block, there's 4 or 5 other sites asking about it. I will look into things and chat about it with the other admins and see what we come up with. We'll post something up here a little later about affiliation, until then, just hold tight! We have a lot on our plate right now, and things probably wont settle down until shortly after Sept 10th, but I'm pretty sure you can expect to hear an announcement before that.

And no, Tyche, no banner axing. It's like brief mode on a MUD. Advertisement is part of the Internet (this entire world, really) and ignoring it isn't all that hard… but ya, blinky things distract me easily too :S

I know that I'd asked about it before, at least once.. but never really got an answer. *shrug*

No rush or anything, to be perfectly honest, my life's in a state of unheaval too, and the earliest I can see any sign of relief for my own issues would be mid-September as well.

I can turn off avatars. I can switch off emoticons.
Why shouldn't I be able to switch off other annoying graphics like banners?
It makes perfect sense to allow people opt out of annoying graphics, especially when nobody is paying for that priviledge.

Anyway just wondering… about focus…

1) Why rotate mud's banners and not banners for code, areas, and snippets?
If you are going to show banners at all maybe you should reserve one side for banners for repository items.

2) Why no comments and ratings for muds, just code? Or really vice versa?
Actually I think the ideal would be to ditch the code ratings and provide the ability to add comments for both.

Egads, I may have to agree with Tyche about something..

I don't really 'get' the code ratings either. I don't see a point in banners for code and such, but having comments/reviews for muds would probably not be a bad idea, as long as it's left entirely to the listing admin to 'moderate' the coments/reviews for their own listing so that no one has to pester the site admins about them, also, that way, no one would be able to fault the site admins if a listing admin decided they wanted to remove any negative reviews/comments or even all reviews/comments. I know this was discussed awhile ago, but I don't recall off-hand what the outcome was. I know there are folks like Zeno who'd much rather not have any ratings/reviews/comments, and some who'd prefer to be able to approve any such attachments to their listings (myself included), and those who'd argue against any form of moderation of such. But I honestly think we can easily take what happened at MudMagic as grounds to avoid such a fiasco by allowing the listing admin full moderation priviledges over the comments/reviews attached to their listing.

As far as opting out on graphics.. *shrug*
How many of us are on dial-up or otherwise such tight bandwidth that the graphics involved here make a significant difference? If they really bother you that much, turn them off in your browser.

I'm stuck on dialup! But even with the banners, this site seems to load in under a second, even if I've JUST cleared out my cache. Just goes to show what doing something right can accomplish!

We are not going to turn off the banners. If they are that annoying, do what you already have to do on any other site that rotates them: Use the tools available to you in your browser to filter them out.

Rotating banners for code… interesting I suppose. Will discuss it with Davion and Asylumius. Though I can tell you right now it would be limited in scope to actual codebases and not the masses of snippets.

As far as why no comments on mud listings, it's simple. They would almost certainly result in review bashing as has been seen countless times on other sites that allow commenting on mud listings. I'm sure I'm not alone in my desire to avoid that happening here. Code comments for the most part don't seem to cause the same kind of reactions except for our exchange on Mudmagic. At least as far as I've seen.

Do that many codebases have banners to rotate?

Reasonable enough.. Guess I'm just always looking for new ways to promote my mud. *L*

I have to agree in the fact that reviews and comments can be bad, first off if you are going to allow reviews and comments they shouldn't be limited on what they can post (provided its an actuall opinion about the mud and not petty attacks for what ever reason). The best way to deal with that issue is not to bother allowing them at all.

Not really sure what the whole reason is to allow them in the code part either. Guess it allows them in the code part for issues with them. People would end posting issues with the code on the forums anyways and it would be harder to find. With them right where you download the code its easy to find whats been posted about a code right then and there before you even download it.

So, I guess I'd vote for having it like it is right now.

Yeah, I've used the comments for bugfix info and have seen others do the same. Pretty handy place to have it.

Yeah, keep comments for code. I've already found that very useful.

Ratings though? I really would prefer not to have any for code. Instead, there maybe should be a reputation system for users.

I have to agree that comments for the code are very useful. Not only for having a handy place to post bug fixes, but also to provide feedback to the author.

I still don't really understand the ratings thing on code, so whatever comes of that one will mean little to me..

A reputation system for users, Zeno? Like MudMagic's system? Where users put down or praise other users? Care to elaborate? And what purpose would that serve? Or, perhaps the better question would be, what would that reputation impact?
26 Aug, 2006, Zeno wrote in the 17th comment:

Nah, like vBulletin's rep system.

I don't like reputation systems for users. It breeds the same kind of political crap that allowing reviews for muds would cause. It's also one reason we didn't leave the topic ratings code in place once the code repository module was built.

The code ratings are there to help give an overall picture to the author/submitter of how people like the code. Yes, it can also result in the same kind of politics. But again, like code comments, doesn't appear to have done that in the only other place it's been used so far.

You ought to open up the editing of names, authors, and descriptions to users, especially the ftp.game.org entries, so those who know what these files are can add proper descriptions.

Why couldn't 'those who know what these files are' just post a comment so the person who uploaded it, or the site admins could 'fix' these things? I know I certainly wouldn't particularly like the idea of anyone who chose to being able to come along and modify the name, author, or descriptions of my snippets, as modestly humble as they may be, they are still my own.
