Writing as list owner:

I guess I asked for this with that piece about code in the
invitation. My intention is not that the list should become a
programmer's debug haven. Queries of this type are really off-topic,
especially very general compiler, platform or library feature
questions like this one. That sort of traffic is better served by the
relevant newsgroups and Linux/C++/g++ mailing lists.

However, I also realise that you all recognise the fact that we
have collected here as members some very competant programmers (and
other skills/professions) with a very wide range of experience. I
know its awfully tempting to take advantage of that fact with
off-topic questions. I've been there and done that on other lists.

    My official position: I don't like off-topic posts, and I don't
appreciate them. Don't do it.

My unofficial position: I'l overlook a very low level of off topic
posts as long as the following conditions are met:

        a) There should be a damned good reason for asking on the list
and not by direct email.
        b) They must have a subject header that starts with "OT:".
        c) Unless the answer to the post is on-topic (unlikely) they
must be replied to by direct email, not on the list. If the reply is
somehow on-topic for the list, the OT: prefix should be removed.
        d) The posts must ask a simple, clearly identified and (if
possible) simply answerable question. I don't want invitations to
discussion, or waffley general questions that can easily bleed into
the list.
