And they were typically protected by a line of in- } fantery so they did have time to switch weapons. But their main use } was to break up enemy charges of infantery and light cavalry who had } only light armour that could be pierced by an arrow at a distance. } Crossbows where short range weapons that took long to reload and did } not carry far, but could pierce heavy cavalry armour at close range. } Longbow was also much more accurate than crossbow. } In a game longbows should be used for accurate firing at a distance } but do relatively light damage and slow down rather than injure. Everybody in a big room and let them sort out who } is facing who doesn't work well here. I remember a long debate on an AD&D newsgroup (when I still browsed it) regarding the speed, range and damage of longbows and crossbows. After what seemed to be a pretty thorough research of medieval arms, the consensus reached was: Crossbows are usually cocked with mechanical aids. -> Longbow firing rate is higher. -> Crossbows may be fired just as effectively by weak or injured persons. Crossbows have stronger pull, flatter trajectory and heavier ammo. -> Longbows have longer range. -> Crossbows are more accurate. -> Crossbows do more damage at short ranges (actually pierce HEAVY armor). Crossbows are much easier to use. -> It takes a long time to train a longbowman but every peasant can be decent with a crossbow after practicing a couple of days. Have fun, Alex.

Follow-Ups:

Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore

From: Matt Chatterley <root#mpc,dyn.ml.org>

References:

Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore

From: Marian Griffith <gryphon#iaehv,nl>

Prev by Date: Re: [MUD-Dev] Nation of shopkeepers

Next by Date: Attn JCL: A scenario for you

Prev by thread: Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat

Next by thread: Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore

Index(es):

Date

Thread

Thread context:

Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat messages, (continued)

Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat messages, Adam Wiggins nightfall#user1,inficad.com, Mon 14 Jul 1997, 08:32 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat messages, Martin Keegan martin#cam,sri.com, Mon 04 Aug 1997, 16:00 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat messages, Matt Chatterley root#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Tue 05 Aug 1997, 00:04 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] Combat, clawrenc clawrenc#cup,hp.com, Thu 31 Jul 1997, 08:12 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore, Alex Oren alexo#bigfoot, com, Sun 13 Jul 1997, 20:21 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore, Matt Chatterley root#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Mon 14 Jul 1997, 04:49 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] not about pk anymore, clawrenc clawrenc#cup,hp.com, Wed 30 Jul 1997, 07:04 GMT

[MUD-Dev] Integrating PK, Cynbe ru Taren cynbe#laurel,actlab.utexas.edu, Thu 10 Jul 1997, 11:16 GMT

Re: [MUD-Dev] Supporting RP+PG, Matt Chatterley root#mpc,dyn.ml.org, Tue 01 Jul 1997, 21:53 GMT

[ Other Periods | Other mailing lists | Search ]
