A Solid, Gray Fog~
You stand before an enormous expanse of rolling, thick fog.  Glancing
left and right, the gray extends as far as you can see in either direction. 
But instead of rolling outward to swallow the rest of the realm, it remains
suspended in the air like a shroud.  You are about to turn and walk swiftly
when the darkness parts ominously.  A gate rises before you waiting to be
opened.  Meanwhile, imaginary voices whisper, "Turn back now."

You plunge your hand bravely, or perhaps foolishly, into the fog and
nearly collapse as a deep chill settles into your bones.  As the cold seeps
into your soul, you recoil and fall to the ground staring intently at your
hand.  Surprisingly, it is still attached to your body.

Stepping through the gate leaves you on a solitary, dim path.  The bleak
fog on either side of you is impenetrable.  No life sits anywhere and the
only movement is that of the fog surrounding you.  There is no visible
landscape or vegetation.  There is only the path leading south away from
this insanity or north to the unknown.

The darkness assails your senses filling you with claustrophobic
delusions.  Tendrils of fog seek your flesh but recoil from the path that
radiates a faint nimbus of holiness.  You can still flee from this forsaken
land or continue north.

and touch the earth sensing potent, but struggling magic.  Hopefully, it is

You pause momentarily sensing something different in the air.  You notice
that the darkness seems to collapse inward then roll outward with greater
force.  Yet, it does not spill onto the path that holds it at bay with
magic.  You feel another force working against the blight but cannot place
where its restorative powers come from.  Suddenly, you notice movement
ahead.

Hanging Garden~
You stand on the path between two stark patches of darkness.  Nothing
seems different until you notice flowers littering the edges of the road. 
Death lilies and black roses lie there in various states of decay.  You peer
into the waning darkness and make out the faint outline of trees.  What
could grow in this bleak land?  You squint to discern the trees from the
endless night and are surprised that they thrive.  Undulating branches grasp
dead men and women of various races by their necks.  Flesh occasionally
falls onto the ground as fertilizer.  You see a tree leaning nearer to the
path then the rest.  It grasps a corpse close enough to touch.

A Worn Path~
The darkness recedes several feet from the path's light that has grown in
intensity.  Hints of renewed life are apparent as you step cautiously to
avoid trampling it underfoot.  A calming breeze blows from the east where
the light grows steadily.

A Patch of Light~
Bright light surrounds you as you step from the retreating darkness. 
Feelings of peace and contentment flow through you easing past sorrows and
weariness from your bones.  A desire to stay and rest beneath the shade of a
tree enters your mind.  A bed of grass and flowers radiate an aura of
tranquility.  The patch of compressed flora seems to indicate that many
travellers have heeded the summons to rest.  An innocent cottage stands
nearby.  Perhaps you should explore it after a nap.

sigh in contentment and wonder how anything could grow so freely in this
blight.  *pLoP* A bird has an accident on your head.  Muttering with slight
annoyance, you decide that it is time for that yearly bath when you find a

Before the Cottage~
Giant trees rise before you to an impossible and dizzying height.  These
sentinels somehow block out the darkness and gray fog.  Soon, the path ends
at a picket fence, gate swinging open at the hinges.  Though no one is
around, the cottage appears to be in perfect maintenance.  Flowers in the
garden bloom and continue to flourish.  You approach a door.  Maybe you
should knock although no one seems at home.  After a minute, you turn to
leave but light glints from a shadowed windowpane attracting your attention.

Inside a Quiet Home~
Silence.  Overwhelming silence fills your senses.  You nearly collapse
from the vertigo and nausea that sudden removal of sensation induces. 
Slowly recovering your bearings, you lean on the window for support and look
about the room.  There is an air of antiquity hovering around you.  Yet,
everything appears clean and orderly.  No dust covers any space.  A stove is
hidden in an alcove near the rear of the cottage and a small table is
situated near it.  A polished skull lies on the table.  To your left,
numerous books line the shelves and you begin to see runes of power
inscribed on the walls.  Looking carefully, you see the runes flare briefly
and faintly with a green light.  Darkness swallows the cottage momentarily
then retreats.  You turn to the door but it will not budge.  Neither will
the window.  You are trapped!

A skull rests on the table staring emptily into space.  While you try to
puzzle out what creature's skull this is, empty sockets animate with life
briefly.  You step away.

When the runes lay dormant, you edge closer to the inscriptions and
realize that they act as wards against evil.  You feel a sensation similar
to that of the path radiating from these runes.

The stove appears to be in perfect working order.  Opening it, you
discover that you can crawl inside.  Where does it lead?

The Attic~
You lift open the trapdoor and heave yourself onto the hardwood of the
attic floor.  Standing upright, you sense something different in the air. 
Tiny shafts of light poke through minute holes in the ceiling revealing
specks of dust.  Sturdy chests are scattered throughout the attic and you
see archaic relics on the floor.  Everything seems disturbed for some
reason.  Before you can scavenge through the objects further, waves of
darkness send you sprawling.  Cautiously, you rise and choke off a scream. 
Something is here in the room with you.

inside its confines?  As you step closer, you begin to feel sicker and
sicker.  Eventually, you double over in painful convulsions.  Your suffering
