`kOutside the Brew-and-Bakehouse``~
`c You are standing outside the Abbey's Brew-and-Bakehouse. It is here that
the Abbey's bread is baked and much of its grain is stored. The building
seems almost a part of the wall that runs along the south edge of the Great
Court. It seems constructed of the same stones, and the masonry work seems
very similar. The smell of freshly baked loaves wafts from an open window,
and you feel compelled to enter (maybe you might be supplied with a sample?)

`kThe Southern Wall of the Great Court``~
`c As you make your way along the southern most part of the Great Court you
notice a strange odor. Unlike the lovely smell of freshly baked loaves
which eminates from the Brew-and-Bakehouse, this is the smell of death, a
vile stench which makes you gag when you breath deeply. Looking around you
discover its source: hidden behind a small rise is the corpse of a dead
fox. Both it's eyes have been gouged out and a small horde of insects and
grubs have already begun their work. You quickly back away and continue on.``

`kThe Brew-and-Bakehouse's Central Room``~
`h The central room of the brew-and-bakehouse is very simple in its
design. The outer walls are made in much the same fashion as the high wall
which surrounds the Great Court, while the inner walls seem constructed of
wooden slats. The smells are amazing, from the east wafts the mouthwatering
smell of freshly baked bread, and from the east the smell of fermenting
liquers, an alcoholic drink unique to the monks of this Abbey. A large
storeroom lies through an open door to the south.``

`kThe Vegetable Garden``~
`c This is the main section of the vegetable garden, from here it extends to
the north and east, with only the lawn of the Great Court to the south and
west. Unlike the part just to the east, this part of the garden is
producing many vegetables along with various vines and shrubs that are
hanging with tomatos, potatoes and any other vegetable that you can imagine,
and some you've never seen before.``

`kThe Vegetable Garden``~
`c This section of the vegetable garden seems dedicated to producing a
variety of unusual herbs and spices, numerous small bushes with unusual
foliage grow in orderly rows the length of the garden. You decide that
these must be the herbs used in baking, and the production of the Abbey's
famed liqueurs. A piece of red tape runs the perimeter of the garden,
probably designed to keep people like you off the delicate plants!``

`kThe Northern Wall of the Great Court``~
`c This part of the Northern wall seems rather unusual. Unlike the rest of
the wall which surrounds the Court, its stones are placed in an orderly
manner, arranged in something like the pattern used for stacking bricks.
Just to the east of here is the entrance to the Infirmary, and a few yards
to the west you can make out a large iron gate, but cannot see what lies
beyond.``

`kEntrance to the Abbey Cemetery``~
`c Into this part of the northern wall is set a large iron gate.
Origionally it must have been painted a dark green, but now all that remains
is a few flakes of the paint, mingled with the rust that is quickly
engulfing the exposed metal. Looking through the gate you make out what
seems to be a cemetary beyond.

`kA Coppice of Elms``~
`c This section of the Great Court's lawn is a little less green than the rest
probably because of the shade cast by the coppice of native elms that lies
in the middle of the area. They are grouped tightly together, and provide
an unusual break from the uniform expanse of the Court. The trees seem well
cared for, and have obviously been planted in a careful arangement.``

of interest you continue on your way, not wishing to spend longer in the
harsh wind than is really necessary.``

here you can stand facing north-east and take in almost the entire court, it
truly is enourmous. You notice that in the corner the wall seems to have
crumbled a little faster than along the remainder of it's length, and a few
weeds seem to have traced their way in from the outside fields, making their
way in through a number of cracks and schisms in the old and worn stones.``

around shoulder height, what could that be doing there! ``

perfect in it's design, a minature army making it's way from the central

perspective. Barrels of wine and liquer line either side of the room, each
with it's own freshly painted mark on the top of each barrel, some labelling
system that only the brothers can understand. The window set high in the

`l You are standing at the base of a huge vat. It seems constructed of a
number of boards, carefully slatted together so that nails, which could rust
and corrode, were not required. Around the base is a variety of taps and
outlets, which must allow the brothers to test the quality without disturbing
the valuable liqueur within. A thin ladder runs up the northern side,
providing access to the top of the vat. The cask storeroom lies immediately

`l You step into the room, and into total darkness. There isn't a window, or
an open door to be seen. You hold your light source up higher to get a
better view of the room, just as you do, you notice the wetness that has been
slowly seeping into your boots, looking down you realise you're standing in
a layer of mud! Upon closer examination you realize that it is in fact not
mud, but a layer of peat. This is the fermentation room, where the liqueurs
are left to ferment in a layer of peat, which enhances and enriches their
natural flavours during the 8 years in which they are left here. Realising
that the brothers would probably not appreciate your dirty boots polluting
their carefully collected peat, you leave quickly.``

`l You are standing in the cask storeroom and it certainly lives up to
its name. The walls are lined with casks -- each wall is covered with them

your arms around. There is a large pool of liquid over near the eastern
wall, and you decide that someone must have spilled or dropped a cask to
cause such a mess. To the north is the vat in which the liqueur is stored
before being transferred to individual casks, and from the west you hear a
sound almost like hammering. ``

a hatch in the middle of the vat, probably to allow more spices or herbs if
it is decided that they are needed. The wooden ladder by which you arrived
runs back down the northern face of the vat, and you feel it might be a good
idea to return to the ground, you aren't sure that the top of this vat was
really designed to support your weight.``

`d This barn is huge! The walls extend off into the darkness, and a very
unusual unusual affect is created by the sunlight creeping in through the
slats that make up the high walls of the barn. Through the door to the
north you can see the lush green expanses of the Great Court. To the south
and west the barn continues into darkness. ``

`kThe Barn Floor``~
`d This corner of the barn is very cluttered. Various tools and
implements used for farming are resting against the old and worn walls. A
large stack of hay lies just to your south, and you try to hold in a sneeze,
but fail, and it sends an even bigger cloud of dust into the air. The barn
continues to the north and west. ``

`kThe Barn Floor``~
`d This is the northern part of the Abbey's large barn, which is
constructed in the sourthern section of the Great Court. The western wall
is made of a kind of cedar found around these parts, slatted together at an
angle such that the rain and snow runs off. The northern wall is of a
similar construction with the slats slightly smaller for a more pleasing
affect on the eye.

`kThe Barn Floor``~
`d This part of the barn is hidden in shadow, and it seems to have been
neglected by whoever's responsibility it is to clean this place. In the
corner you can make out a pile of hay with what seems to be a dark shape in
it. You turn to inspect the area and turn up a cloud of dust. Trying to
cover your face with your sleeve you back towards the centre of the barn,
away from the dust.``

`kThe Main Gate of Erion Abbey``~
`l You are standing in the main gate of Erion Abbey. A covered walkway runs
overhead from the stables to the west to the almonry to the east. Its heavy
stone base and thick wooden sides seem overly heavy to be supported by the
feeble wooden struts rising fromt he side of either building, and you can't
help but feel uneasy standing under its mass. To the north you see a vast
courtyard, its lush green expanses extending to the Abbey Church off to the
north.``

`kThe Almonry``~
`l You are standing in the Abbey's Almonry. In this room the Brothers
distribute grains and whatever can be spared to the poor and suffering of
the area. Here is where they fulfill their teachings to aid the less
fortunate, and show their respect for all. A long oak table runs north to
south along the eastern wall of the room, with a small door behind it.
Along the table lie bags of various grains and oats, and a basket of freshly
baked bread from the Bakery. You notice how deliberately the poor fill
their sacks with their alocated portions, careful not to waste a grain of
the food.``

`kEntrance to the Abbey Stables``~
`d This stable is like most other stables you've evern been in. There is
hay strewn across the floor in an attempt to cover the horrid smell. It
doesn't work. The windows set in the north and south walls are pulled open
to allow some air to flow through, and the meager breeze does help to
disperse the stifling smell. To the west you can see the actual stables
where horses are tethered, and to the east is the main gate, from where you
came.``

`kThe Abbey Stables``~
`d The smell in this room is even worse than the entrance. This is where the
horses are actually stabled, and there is "evidence" to that fact scattered
about the room in various places. Stepping carefully to avoid them you move
to the north of the room and peer out the window. Breathing in the clean air
you see the Great Court, its lush expanses stretching to the foot of the Abbey
church. Leaning back inside you bump your head against the rough wooden
window frame. The brothers build all their own buildings, and you think there
mustn't be too many skilled carpenters amongst their numbers.``

`kThe Stable's Hayloft``~
`d You are standing in the eastern end of the stable hayloft. The worn
wooden floor extends off to the west, and a small ladder poping out of a
trapdoor in the middle of the floor leads to the stables below. Not wishing
to return to the source of the pungent stench, you stay a while to examine
the loft. You notice a small message scrawled on the northern wall in what
seems to be a redish-white chalk, "White on black to cloak the truth". What
could that possibly mean? Most probably something thought up by some silly
child to mystify his friends.``

`kThe Abbey Stables``~
`d You're standing in the far eastern end of the stables. It is dark and
stagnant. A few dark shapes scuttle about in the corner, and dart between
the floorboards as soon as you draw near. There is an old wooden ladder
leading up into the hay-loft above, and as you glance up you think you can
make out a dark shape amongst the hay. You gag violently as you inhale, and
all you want to do is get out of here... Obviously the stable hands don't
clean this area often, if at all.``

`kJust inside the Main Gate``~
`c You are standing on a wide, deeply set slate path. Its black form twists
its way north like some giant serpent to the bottom of the Abbey Church.
The black stone, quarried in some distand land (for it is found nowhere near)
makes a stark contrast to the lush green lawn that lies on either side, like
some deep scar that can never be healed. You wonder that an Abbey devoted
to such charitable and compassionate principles fills you with such a feeling
of forboding, and decide that your mood is simply reflecting the dark weather.``

of the room is a small trapdoor with a ladder leading down to the main part

slipping between the shingles of the roof to illuminate the room. You see
the dust stirred up by your movement in the light, and are careful not to
cause too much disturbance. A large pile of dry hay lies in the middle of
the room, and a pitchfork rests neatly against it.``

`c The deeply set slate path winds its way north to the Abbey Church, and

under the influences of time and the many heavy carts that have made their
way along its black form, the endless cartwheels pressing the stones deeper.``

`kThe Almonry Store Room``~
`l This is the Almonry's storeroom. It is surprisingly sparse, considering
the number of people you saw in the main room. You assume that the Abbey
must restock it fairly regularly to be able to distribute the amount of
food that they do. A number of hessian sacks rest against the eastern brick
wall, and four large barrels run along the south. From the smell of the room
they were formerly used to store wine, but were taken for this more basic,
if important task.``

`kThe Southern Wall of the Great Court``~
`c You find yourself standing towards the southern part of the Great Court.
The encircling wall towers behind you, its age-old stones covered in the
moss and lichen so abundant in this area. You wonder at how long it has
stood there, exposed to the cruel weather, and how much longer it will last.
The lush green lawn beneath your feet has a strangely springy quality, most
likely caused by the peat soil beneath. To the north and west, the Court
continues, and just to the east, a wide slate path twists its way north.``

`c You make your way across the lush grass all around, careful not to crush
underfoot the various flowers and small shrubs that have shot up in the rich

tunnel, probably dug by a rabbit or some such animal. All around the lush
green of the Great Court continues, and to the east a slate path makes its
way north and south.``

`c This is one of Erion Abbey's main sources of food, their vegetable
garden. The garden is shaped roughly like a huge 'L', and this section is
the bottom protrusion, off to the east of the main body. The ground has
been plowed recently, and the orderly furrows are ready to be planted in.
Around the edge of the garden runs a bright red tape, which is clearly
designed to keep unwanted people from trampling the vegetables, maybe you'd
best be moving on...``
