SEACLIFF Sea Cliffs
You stand on a narrow worn path, winding its way across the cliff tops. The 
cliffs quiver and shake in unison to the pounding of the waves on the gravel
beaches below. Away to the north the cliffs dip sharply downwards, and the
sight of slate roofs and sandy beaches greets your eyes. A path winds eastwards
away from the cliff turning inland.^

CLIFFPATH Cliff Path
You are scrambling along a narrow worn path which winds its way from a sandy
bay to the north, away up across the top of the high cliffs that rise steeply
up from the beach to the west. A narrow path drops sharply down onto the
beach.^

CITYWALL The City Wall
A narrow path winds down from the cliffs to a small gate in the city walls.
High parapets and strong towers project from the walls giving a menacing air
of strength and power. A path leads eastwards away from the city gradually
ascending the majestic bluffs which tower over the city.^

SGATE The Northern Gate
You stand just inside the north gate of the city of Tranach, gateway to the
western seas, the den of pirates, smugglers, merchants and the occasional
honest man. A narrow lane leads south into a tangle of buildings. To your north
a narrow archway pierces the city wall and leads outside into the wide world
beyond. A tempting dark alleyway runs east along the side of the city walls.^

ALLEY Dark Alley
You are walking down an unpleasant narrow alleyway, jammed between the back
walls of some of the cities more notorious establishments, and the city wall.
The light is dim and shadowy, and everywhere you look there appears to be a
nook or cranny where someone might be waiting to jump out on you.
    The alley follows the wall both east, and west opening up at either end.^

SMYARD Smelly Yard
You are standing in the shadows on one side of a broad and smelly yard. The
ground is covered in horse dung, and as people cross it clouds of flies buzz
up angrily around them. On the southern side of the yard stands a very seedy
looking inn. A reasonably wide cobbled road runs east out of the yard, and
a narrow gloomy alley slinks off to the west past a large trapdoor, you
assume for getting barrels into the inn cellar. ^

INN The Club And Dagger Inn
Everything about the inn appears disreputable. Customers murmur and finger
weapons as you wander in, while all around you people lie semi-unconcious
surrounded by the smell of opium. The door leading back out looks highly
promising, unless you wish to play the local game of getting to the bar without
dying first. ^

CELLAR1 The Cellars
The cellars have clearly been used for centuries to store the beers.
Unfortunately that was probably the last time they were cleaned. Rack
after rack of heavy barrels are securely chained down here, adding year by
year to the unmistakable smell of rotting wood and spilt alcohol.
    A doorway leads south into the southern end of the cellar.^

CELLAR2 The Cellars
The southern end of the cellars is dank and cold but fairly clear and tidy.
With the exception of a few barrels stacked in the eastern corner the room
is empty.^

MEETRM The Meeting Room
You are fairly suprised to find yourself standing in a well furnished chamber,
with a large ornate fireplace set into the north wall. Several comfortable
chairs lurk in the corner of the room, while a bookcase and a large ornate
table adorn the south wall. A narrow doorway leads west.^

HIGHSTREET	The High Street
You are walking along the high street, the main road bisecting the town from
north to south, between the two main gates. Tall proud merchants houses rise
on either side of the street arching out above you, and blocking out most of
the sunlight. To the east a wide courtyard leads up to the high temple, which
rumour has it is a good place to sacrifice treasures.^

TEMPLE		The High Temple
You stand in the high temple, an ancient edifice as old as the city. Tall
weathered, but proud pillars tower above you supporting a vast stone roof.
An atmosphere of calm power pervades this ancient place, as if it were a
sanctuary from all the evils of the world.^

CHIMNEY		Up The Chimney
As you scrabble around in the dirty sooty chimney you are very glad that bricks
protrude from the side of the walls forming crude steps. Unfortunately they are
intended for the small boys who sweep these chimneys so they are small, very
awkward and uncomfortable. The chimney leads both up and down.^

TOWER		The Tower
You are locked away in the rat infested tower, where the emperor keeps all 
those who have upset him in some ways. Rumour has it that he occasionally lets
people out if they apologise a lot, but I'm sure thats only a story....^

ULEDGE	Beneath the ledge
You are standing at the base of a tall jagged cliff. The towering slopes curve
around you, their mighty bulk casting dark oppressive shadows down from on
high. The only openings are to the north where the rocks run round and down in
a long sweeping arc into the sea, and to the south where a narrow crack leads
back into a cave. A narrow path climbs steeply upwards, zigzagging up the cliff
face.^

CCAVE	The Sea Cave
You are standing in a large gloomy limestone cave. Even in this dim light the
cave is strangely peaceful and serene, as if the caves silent and undisturbed
comtemplation of the years filters from the rock. A narrow crack leads north
out into daylight, while a passage slants steeply eastwards and upwards out of
sight. A small tunnel runs west into another cave.^

SLPASG Slanting Passage
You are scrambing up a dangerously narrow, steep and slanting passage. By
wedging yourself between the rocky walls of the passage, you can just about 
keep from sliding back down again. The passage leads upwards becoming even
steeper as it goes, and back down into a limestone cave.^

SLPTOP	Slanting Passage
The slanting passage comes to an abrupt halt, and opens out westwards into a 
wide and well lit chamber. Something about the chamber sends an icy chill
through your heart, and gives you a definite desire to depart back down the
passage.^

SKULL	Skull Chamber
Wild flickering torches light the chamber with a mass of dancing yellow and red
firelight. Shadows seem to dance and sway everywhere you look, while to your
west the entire cave wall is carved into a gigantic skull, eyes aflame and
mouth open, baring huge fangs. A narrow passage leads east to sanity.^

MOUTH	In The Mouth Of The Skull
You stand in the mouth of the skull. A huge blood soaked altar stands between
the mighty fangs, its surface carved with runes and ancient chaos symbols. 
Narrw staircases wind up north and south either side of the altar. To the east
the skull leads out into the flaming cave.^

LEYE	Left Eye
You stand in the left eye of the skull, looking out into the cave. The room is
unbearably hot, with a huge fire burning in the centre of the chamber. Only
the steady draught blowing up the stairs makes it even survivable.^

RBEACH	Rocky Beach
You are standing on a mass of sharp and slippery rock, regularly swept by 
crashing breakers. The water churns and gurgles around your feet, throwing
itself again and again across the rocks, in a wall of foam and spray.^

ROCKRISE	The Rocky Rise
You stand at the base of a jutting rocky outcrop. High above you a tall 
sandstone bluff looms up against the skyline. Looking up you can see a small
hole high above. It's certainly out of reach and the cliffs are not to
be easily climbed.^

RPATH		The Rising Path
You are climbing a steep path which rises eastwards up a sandstone bluff. The
path is partially obstructed by thick brambles and weeds. The path leads up
over the top of the bluff or down west towards a north-south path.^

COPSE		The Copse
You are standing in a small copse of trees on the edge of a sandstone bluff.
A narrow path winds east through the trees, and also descends the bluff to 
the west.^

BYPIT		By The Pit
You are standing in a few trees on the edge of a large pit. Given the clay
soil around here the pit may have been dug to provide clay, although from
the smell it was more likely to have been a latrine.^

UTOWER	Under The Tower
The corridor beneath the tower is long, low and dark, it is also very smelly.
Thick moss hangs around the ceiling, but somewhat alarmingly the floor is
clean. Steps wind up at the end of the corridor, or if you are really foolish
(sorry brave) you could walk eastwards and see what is going on.^

WELLRM	The Well
The corridor opens up into a small circular chamber with a well in the centre.
A rotting rope hangs down the well, there may even be a bucket beneath but that
is too far away to be sure.^

VAMPRM	The Vampyres Chamber
Your heart grows chill as you enter this hideous place. Memories of vampyre
tales your mother told you when you were still young spring to mind. Visions of
horrific screaming deaths... Unfortnately it looks like they migh be about to
come true. Suspicious looking doorways lead west and south.^

STEPS	The Top Of The Steps
A narrow passage leads north from here, or you can descend the dark and winding
staircase, from which a cold draught seems to be blowing.^

RIVCAV	River Cave
You stand in a wide low cavern, on the edge of a wide underground river. The
ledge you are standing on runs west alongside the water, past a narrow 
stairwell cut into the rock, and leading up out of sight into the darkness and
shadows. ^

RAFTRM	Aboard The Raft
The raft is low and seems to glide almost magically upon the rippling waters.^

RIVEND	The End Of The Ledge
The ledge rapidly tapers out and soon there is nothing to stand on. You have 
little alternative but to turn back eastwards. ^

UNBCH	Underground Beach
You are standing on a cold sandy beach, deep underground. You are now totally
lost and could be anywhere. A single passage leads east out of the cave into
darkness so black your light will not even cast shadows into it. ^

DARKPS	Very Dark Passage
The passage turns and twists, leading both east and west. From the west comes
the sound of water, while to the east is silent. ^

Your eyes flick once across the chamber, the lines of statues and the gorgon
waiting in the shadows, and you are stone..^

You stand in a huge pillared hall, decorated throughout with powerful mystic
sigils, and legendary creatures carved from stone. A huge sealed tomb sits in
the centre of the chamber on a high raised dais.^

UTOMB	Beneath The Tomb
You are at the bottom of a deep pit beneath the tomb. The pit is sheer and
some twenty feet deep, bare expect for a single stone shelf, set about four
feet up. Fortunately it is rough enough to scramble up the sides. ^

You are walking down a dark and gloomy passage that threads its way north and
south between two rows of tall overhanging oak beam buildings. A single
crude gutter runs down the centre of the street, intended to carry away the
dirt and sludge, it merely seems to collect it up. A cleaner looking street
branches off eastwards between two buildings.^

HIGHCORNER High Corner
The narrow street opens up a little into a pleasant nook in the south-eastern
corner of town. Large oak beamed houses stand around a small pleasant garden.
Unlike the majority of the city, the air is fresh and clean, and the birds
still sing and twitter in the bushes. To the east a small charred building
lies open, and appears to have suffered a recent fire.^

MRKTSQR	Market Square
You stand in a wide, rather empty square used for the occasional market, and
for state occasions and military parades. Narrow streets exit the square both
east and west.^

You are standing at the southern gate of the City Of Tranach. Ahead of you
a narrow well built road runs out of the city and south through the fields
which surround it. The road leads north into the city.^

HSTREET High Street
You are walking the main street which runs north and south through Tranach,
linking the north and south gates. The road is cobbled, but pitted and worn
from the heavy merchant caravans which often pass this way. A narrow street
turns east off the main road, leading towards a market square.^

You stand in a large circular cave, which echoes to every footstep, every
rustle and noise, picking them out with astounding clarity and neatness.
A single passage leads east. On the wall is written 'say paradise once and
the riddler awaits'.^

You stand in a low broad chamber, decorated with runes and chaos symbols.
The walls are carved with mind-bending escheresque pictures. A single 
passageway leads south into shadows.^

EASTGATE The Eastern Gate
The narrow street comes to a small, stout looking gatehouse. A narrow 
cobbled lane runs east through the gate out into the wide world beyond.^

EASTROAD	The Great Eastern Road
You stand just outside the city of Tranoch, on the far western end of the
great eastern road, the long caravan trail through the mountains and beyond,
the trail of so many legends and songs, and the road to the mysterious orient.
For all of this it seems to be a fairly boring cobbled road leading off
eastwards into the distance, and westwards through a small gate into the 
walled city. A narrow weed covered path runs south into a quiet, deserted
graveyard.^

You are in the magnificent throne hall of the Emperors Of Tranoch, decadent^

You are crossing the low flat plains which stretch away to the east and south.
To the north a formidable range on mountains prevent further travel and to the

range. Far to the east you can see a hill topped with what looks like a tall

Far to the east a single hill rises up from the plains in which you now
stand. To the north the mountains seem to give off a strange bluish light

sand borders the shore of a mist shrouded lake.

You are standing atop a small hill marvelling at the wonderous landscape that
rolls away before you in all directions. Beside you an old oak bends double
towards the ground, its trunk split wide open possibly by lightning.

SHUT Behind The Shack
You are behind a small shack with no windows and no visible entrance from this
side. A darkness looms to the west and to the east a cliff pushes high into the

You stand under the shadow of a seemingly unscaleable cliff. Near the base of
the cliff, a small bowl of rock pokes out from between some bushes.^

You are striding along in the shadow of the escarpment to the east. To
the north the ground becomes marshy and to the west a small hut stands

You are in marshlands south of a silvery, Mist shrouded lake. To the 
east a cliff towers above you while to the west the marsh looks

Standing outside of the small shack you see that it has been unoccupied for
many years and the door has long since fallen in. A path leads away up a hill
to the west while to the east a cliff looms up above.^

You are inside the small shack, open doorways lead west and east and a 
fireplace, filled with debris stands against one wall.

You are inside someones bedroom. A makeshift cupboard has long since rotted
away but the strong blackwood bed still lies against the far wall.^

This was once a neat pantry but now broken crockery lies over the floor and the
rotting shelves threaten to collapse under their own weight. In one corner a

Rock walls make you wonder how this small cellar was ever excavated this far 
from civilisation. The remains af a ladder lie on the floor under the hole you
came in from and the rotting bodies and skeletons of rodents long dead tell you
that the only way out must be back through the hole you jumped down.^

after a fire. Not much has survived but for the large heavy blocks that
made up the forge and the anvil. A battered doorway leads west, another leads

SMITHB The Treadmill
You are standing on a battered treadmill. It was here that young destitute
children would earn just enough food to survive on, by turning the treadmill
day after day after day, to drive the machinery.^

CMOUNT1 The Foot Of The Central Mountains
You stand at the foot of a high and steeply rising mountain range. The tall
gloomy mountains rise up steeply to the north and the east, their gloomy
cloud shrouded heads rising high into the skies. A well worn path picks
its way east and west through the foothills.^

CMOUNT2 The Abyss
The ground comes to a sudden end, and you are looking down vast distances
into a deep valley. Hundreds of feet below you can make out the faint glint
of water amidst the green haze. A narrow path winds north back away from the
edge of the abyss.^

CMOUNT3 The Mountain Road
The track turns sharply around, winding its way east west across the mountains.
Dreary mountain peaks rise around you, and the air is chill and damp. There is
little vegetation to break the monotony of the landscape, the odd stunted and
bent conifer, fighting for survival, and a few mosses and low bushes here and
there.^

'The road goes ever on..', seems to have true meaning as you trudge your way
across the desolate windswept landscape. As far as you can see eastwards the
mountain road winds on and on through the mountains, a single trail against
a vast, soul shattering, wall of grey.^

You stand at the western end of the mountain road. As the road dips eastwards
and downwards the grey rocky slopes give way to first thin and then thick
forest. To the east the road winds rapidly out of view as it twists and

REMTEMP The Temple Of Rememberance
The wind sighs gently around you, brushing off the battered and ancient
stones, skipping lightly around the mighty pillars, and through the arches of
the vast hall. The slowly cracking, and powdering stones each bear myriad
names, slowly fading into unreadability, each one another of man's feeble
clutches at immortality. Every name fading, soon to be forgotten, another
nameless face that once was.
There is a kind of deep solemness about the temple, an almost museumlike
feeling of preservation. At the same time there is a mocking sadness at the
futility of human endeavour, and the knowledge that one day even the temple
will pass to dust.^

TEMPGATE The Temple Gate
The gates of the Temple Of Rememberance loom over you, huge forbidding
pieces of ironwork, now rusted forever open. Inside, through the gates, all is
still and quiet. Weeds grow around the temple, flaunting its claim to
permenance, and showing that one day even the temple will fall and be
forgotten. Thick bushes grow along the path which leads back northwards
through the courtyard out onto the road.^

TEMPCOURT The Temple Courtyard
Weeds and bushes march steadily southwards, down the crumbling stone path to
the Temple Of Rememberance. The path is already well on the road to ruin, and
the temple is starting to fall. In another thousand years perhaps, the wind
will dance through the trees and bushes, and it alone will remember the
temple.^

SIDEYARD The Side Yard
The bushes and trees break around a still, mirrorlike pool, edged with black
stone. Leaves and weed float on the still surface, hiding much of the
reflection of the tall trees sighing gently overhead. A narrow trail leads
south past the pool into a still and strangely silent graveyard.^
