Oh neat! Do they have a rich api in place, or do you pretty much just create each new webapp from scratch?

Well, Pikkle uses some proprietary stuff they invented for richer graphics on flashlite called Rash. It's pretty rich 3d rendering via flash for being on a cell phone. We have some rails libraries we take from game to game for item definitions, etc. Basically we scaffold the entire game out then start filling flows in with flash until it's where the design docs say. But all 3 of the major cell phones carriers in japan are mandated to support flash. Which is kinda why we do things this way. The docomo phones are a little flaky since they won't store cookies, but we get around it.

EDIT: I was looking at Kongregate as a platform for rails apps (games of course) but the latest rails game released kind of scared me of. Wonderful game, not doing so well.

What game is that?

As a side note, Kongregate's sort of known for dicking around with developers and dipping into their tips. Not that you can expect much else from a website ran by Gamestop.

Runter, it is Fantasy University. It feels like a facebook game, but it is a rails app hosted by Heroku. The game is absolutely HILARIOUS. It cracks me up =)

I'll check it out. And yeah, I've been wanting to toy around more with Heroku. Heroku works with anything build on rack. I might see if a little sinatra app can get hosted there easily.

I love how light weight Sinatra is but putting together routes seems a little clunky to me. Could just be because I'm not much of a web developer though =)

That's because it's just for super small apps. It doesn't really support the controller/action scheme you'd want for a large web app. It's surprising, though, how often small apps are what I'm working on.

Yeah, doesn't look like that Fantasy University works currently. :p

Hi,

I gave the new look a quick glance.

First, the page template looks really nice and professional, although the aspect ratio of some of the art looked a bit off (as in, stretched out?).

Once I started a game, however, the UI became really dry (as in text-y). While the first impression (splash) is the key to attracting people, the gameplay UI is the key to retaining them. I know it's a lot more work to make a visual and engaging UI than it is to create a nice template, but I'm hoping you're working on it already. Nowadays, many in your audience will expect clickable and draggable icons, ajax pushing new info to areas of the page without page re-loads, js "popups" emulating a "windows" environment, etc.

Hello

Sorry about bumping the thread since I hadn't posted in quite awhile but have some big changes going on at the site and wanted to let people know. We are moving to a private server today!!! That means no more server crashes and downtime so the game will run a lot smoother.
Other changes since I last posted are we have installed brand new forums, got a new blog for the site , worked on a lot more tutorials to learn the game faster. We have added an auto protection option so if a person doesn't want to explore we do it for them. We will be adding a new game to the site next month as a test server to try out new things. Like new civilizations, Egyptians and Aztec civilization will be added to the game soon also.
Stop by and try out the new server and see if the game runs faster. It better, it costs a lot more :) You can get to the game through this link

www.new1000ad.com

or this page which will lead you to the tutorials, forums and all the other stuff a person needs to learn this game.
