First published in 2001, Imaginary Realities is remembered fondly as being a place where you can read interesting mudding-related articles. Or even get your own published.

Our new revival is targeted at text-based gaming in general, and in this issue we feature our first roguelike-related article kindly contributed by Matthew Ward.

Read it online, or download a version to read offline at:

Wow, fantastic article on roguelikes. Was that original for this issue? Gonna share with my RL friends. :D

Thanks for publishing this one in a timely manner. :) And yes, it's interesting with the broadening to a roguelike discussion in there too (will probably need to re-read it to actually get the gist of it though).

Yes, all our content is original. What I like about the approach is that in theory whenever we publish, anyone interested in articles of this kind should get a collection of new ones on the subject of text-based gaming to read through at their leisure. Please share it. We need to publicise the journal better, so ideas for places to announce it are appreciated (currently it's mudconnect, topmudsites, mudbytes, roguelike reddit, roguelike dev reddit, mud reddit and rogue temple forum).

There's two offers for articles for the next issue already, one being interactive fiction related. If you know anyone I should approach to write an article, or any other suggestions, they'd be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, it's a combination of volunteer efforts, which means when people get around to it. I'd love to be able to guarantee that we can publish a month after the article deadline, as was the initial intention, but.. it just doesn't seem to work out. The previous issue before this was an aberration though, and complications delayed it way too much.

@donky
The comment was not intended as subtle criticism (but it reads like it when I read it now, sorry). I'm just happy IR has been re-vitalized, regardless of how often it comes out. :)

I tend to announce each issue best I can in the various Evennia community outlets, as well as try to urge people to help contribute. We'll see if someone picks up on it. Glad to hear there are already new articles lined up. I'll try another one too.

Good to hear. Knowing it's targeting a wider audience than just MUDs may bring me to contribute in the future… been playing roguelikes for 15 years, obviously a big fan. I already shared it with the creator of 100 Rogues (best RL on iOS imo) and know a couple other guys to share it to (thinking Slashie, creator of innumerable RLs at http://slashie.net, and kkairos, the dude behind the MathRL games written in MegaZeux at https://sites.google.com/site/kkairosspo...).
