Merc 2.2 does have some stability issues with the mobprogs though. Personally I'd favour Merc 2.1.

Again, I recommend Merc 2.2 if you want to learn coding. Much cleaner than ROM, and certainly less complicated than anything that came after it. However, it's very old, and you'll be learning a lot of 'stupid tricks' no longer necessary on modern computers. For instance, current 'good practice' eschews the space saving but cryptic function names.
