What do you all think about a few of us getting together to play this tonight:

http://bitfighter.org/

Or, any other multiplayer PC game (because I don't have a console) relatively easy to download.

Suggest games in this thread!

If we're looking for free games to play I'm more of a FPS kind of guy.

americas army
assaultcube
nexuiz
urban terror
enemy territory

What would be your top choice? Also what would be good for an older rig (I just have a non-gaming laptop).

Too bad http://www.playtribes.com/ hasn't opened yet.

But you could DL it at http://www.fileplanet.com/140246/140000/... if you don't mind installing something.

An older FPS, but a fantastic game.

Well this may not happen tonight, but keep the suggestions coming, we can just organize games in this thread.

All of the games I listed except for americas army should run fine on older machines. :) AA I'm not too sure about, haven't played it in a while but a fun free game.

http://www.americasarmy.com/
http://assault.cubers.net/
http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/
http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php
http://www.splashdamage.com/wolfet?s=fe7...

Links to make it easier.

That reminds me of the old "netrek" game.
I like the idea, so if there's a night people have in mind, let me know! :)

Oooooo, this sounds promising!

I used to play subspace. This looks similar.

Subspace was good…But FreeSpace 2 is better :D

Holy crap. That FS2 site is awesome. I didn't realize development was so active, or indeed that there was any at all going on in the fan community. I got my start with modding, back in the days of flipping bits in hex files; being able to mod such a good game with the source code is a dream come true. (I attribute my early learning of C to Quake2 modding, where you had half of the game's source available to you.)

All you need to hop back into FS2 with the updates from that site is an original copy…Which can be had via digital download (DRM free) at Good Old Games for a modest $10 or less :)

Is that to play it at all, or just the main campaign? The site talks about a lot of mods and even TCs that presumably have their own game data.

That's to play it all. The only reason you even need an original copy is for the artwork and models, since the mod crew is strictly working code (aside from the full campaigns that were developed, too :).

I would suggest playing something along the lines of The Battle for Wesnoth, an open source rpg/turn-based strategy game.
http://www.wesnoth.org/

It runs equally well on windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
It also has a very good quality meta-server that other open source/free games do not normally have.

I've played Wesnoth before – that's not a real-time multiplayer, right?

Would be fun to have a MB game going…do you need to host the server or is there something already running for exchange of turns?

Wesnoth is a turn based strategy game. No real-time.

I've downloaded Wesnoth again.

Looks like there are some good choices here…I'll be doing something Sunday for whoever is around. I'll post up here later with details.
