Well I just remembered that I have this running and it seems to mostly
work, and since there's at least one mud banned from the Democratic
People's Republic of Kayle, seems worth mentioning that folks have
an alternative.

That's right, you have an alternative.

You can point your IMC2 client at 66.197.134.110 port 8888
and you'll be connected to Intermud-3 through the magic of a
protocol translator I put together.

The bad news is that I'm incredibly aggressive about enforcing the
LPMuds.net i3 network rules.

Good news is, I'm not Kayle.

Cmon over!*

It's a load of fun!**

*Offer valid only for those who have read the rules and
agree to abide by them.

**Fun not guaranteed.

Just in case yer wondering, this is not some kinda push to get people
off the mudbytes IMC2 servers.

The codebase I maintain automatically connects there, I support it,
I luv Davion and Kayle…well I think I do…so there's no hostility here.

I just read HK's post somewhere on a related item and remembered
I have this thing working and figured I might share the info that there
isn't really an intermud monopoly, it's a duopoly, you're free to
choose your fascist.

Heil Cratylus!

Do you have an open community, or is it a handful of people who are "buddy buddy" like on the mudbytes network?

There are folks who feel fondness for each other, folks who'd
miss each other if they left, sure. It's a community. But I think
I get the feeling that you're asking about petty cliques forming
around authority figures.

That doesn't really happen.

I've worked pretty hard at establishing a standard that
removes "pleasing Crat" as the way to stay on the network.
Ask Duuk, Hellmonger, and Arren if they feel compelled to
be my pal. Ask Kalinash if pissing me off has any consequences.
Other than his amusement, that is.

I suppress speech that is offtopic for a given channel
(for example, trying to discuss House on a channel for
codebase support) or breaks rules, etc. And I'm a right
bastard about it if I have to do it more than once. But
what you'll find, if you ask around, is that these
actions are not predicated on me feeling personally offended
or having my feelings hurt. I've set forth a mission for
the router and I believe in it and the rules that advance
this mission are the only thing that drive my fascism,
if and when I have to exercise it.

So, *I* think it's "open", because the rules aren't designed
around advancing sycophancy toward me nor advancing some
political agenda. I also do not require secret discussion
of policy nor am I made unhappy by vociferous opposition to
my ideas or me personally. That is irrelevant to the mission.

I don't know if this fits your definition of open, but
I invite you to join and find out for yourself. The worst
I foresee happening is your mud getting kicked off channels
for racist talk and winding up with just the free_speech
channel to talk on.

If the cliques formed around authority figures it'd be more obvious, most of the time it looks more like "I'll rub your back if you rub mine" by a bunch of nerds with self esteem issues.

Maybe we should try it sometime? I'll praise dead souls, crat praises the oriental dojo, and the fury in turn praises tintin. If someone flames crat, fury will jump in, I'll jump to the defense of fury, and crat will have my back when things get nasty. It'll take people a very long time to figure out the exact dynamics, but to be safe we must invite a 4th person. Tyche would be perfect because nobody would expect him to do the whole petty clique thing.

I understand now.

The problem is that what you're afraid of is kind of "how the world works".

For example, let's take someone who is really not fond of me at all, Duuk.
I've actually banned the dude, and he resents me for X number of reasons.
I find him loathsome for Y number of reasons. Truly there is no love lost.

Yet we chat in a civilized manner most of the time, and if you showed
up and decided to give me a hard time in a way that was counter to the
established traditions of "how to hassle Crat", he'd prolly be on your
case in a heartbeat, laughing his ass off.

To you, it would be indistinguishable from Duuk being my droog.

To me, it would be Duuk being a jerk in a really clever way to
you AND me, since it complicates things for me.

I have no way to guarantee you safe passage through i3 without
your collusion sensors going off at red alert. Sorry. Join or
don't. I can't vouch for how you interpret what you see.

I've switched VPS, and this one is way more stable and awesome.
As a result, the IMC2 server has moved. The new address:

97.107.133.86 8888

aka

dead-souls.net 8888

For details on rules, channels, etc, see:

I fixed some bugs on this thing which should help folks on older clients see channels,
if they had trouble before. The most commonly used channels are listed here: http://lpmuds.net/intermud.html

typically it's:

imud_gossip (like ichat, sometimes vulgar, but widely used)
dchat (pg-13 newbie friendly talk)
imud_code (code specific stuff)
discworld-chat (self explanatory)
free_speech (anything legal goes)

and it's still at dead-souls.net 8888
aka: 97.107.133.86 8888

For the rules, see: http://lpmuds.net/intermud.html#rules

Oh, almost forgot, SHA256 isn't supported, you'll have to disable it in yer config to connect.

if this is directed to me, I don't really since I'm not quite running any active projects. But it still is useful information for me to have for the future.

(Who else could it have been directed at?)

Well, my question now is why this is useful information? I'm guessing that it's useful if you believe that it would be useful to have SHA256. I'm curious why you believe it is useful. (Note: this is mostly idle curiosity, and only becomes an issue if somebody truly cares about it as a show-stopping problem. So it's not worth spending time on if you don't have a quick answer.)

I don't really know much about sha256 except that it's a password encryption protocol. I also know that it is used as the default on some codebases such as smaugFUSS. This is the only real reason I even asked. I don't even know what a lack of support for it on an IMC network would mean.

I suppose a secure connection for the password would be arguably useful, but keep in mind generally all muds don't use secure connections. It's hard to justify it under those circumstances when there's arguably much bigger security holes to worry about. Like your actual admin logins being compromised. Also additional secure connectivity to the server beyond the password authentication seems rather useless. Furthermore, it's unlikely that sha256 would actually protect a value identified as the password by an even marginally sophisticated attacker. If such things were really important I suspect a SSH connection would be better.
