With how fervent the discussions can be here at times, it might be a nice addition to have a front page section like Recent Posts that is exclusively for promotional threads with 3 or 4 spaces say. Fisban's thread i doubt lasted a day in the Recent Posts section, not long enough to attract interest. This would give a little more opportunity for exposure to those advertising, it would keep the Recent Posts section filled with the more interesting discussions and also it might remove the temptation of bumping threads just to keep it visible, because of the high turn over in the main section.

Nope not close to a day, I posted it today.

I thought that the site wasn't meant to be primarily a promotional site?

Also, if I might make a "sugestion" of my own, it would be to spell-check subject titles!

You can, but i don't know how much good it will do, LOL

I received back a paper i wrote on volcanism where i had written that a certain type of volcano occurs predominantly on seduction zones of ocean plate with continental plates. The accompanying comment was, it this the porn version of a geophysical process.

Who said it was? Actually I think his idea draws the attention 'away' from promotions by making there be separate categories. It does help people promoting, but it also puts the attention on non adverts by making the recent posts not be cluttered by promotions.

What I meant is that any suggestion that does something special with promotional posts seems odd on a site that isn't aiming to get that many. And really, we've just gotten a few in the past few days – I'm not sure it's worth doing much until it actually becomes an issue.

That's why its called a suggestion, no one is saying that we need to act, it was merely an observation i made with a possible solution. Recent Code Comments could be reduced to make way for the new section, 5 spaces seems to be a lot when only 2 of them are current and the others date back 3 months or more.

I agree with Fury's suggestion. Sure it isn't a problem now, but preventative maintenance is the best kind of maintenance. It will give promotions more visibility and it won't interfere with the rest of the posts! =)

I personally think it should become one now, since MudRage no longer exists.

i dont think it should become "Primarily" a promotional site, mudbytes has it's niche and it fills it quite well, however, i do think it would be good for the community if the promotional side were stepped up a little bit. after all, the more places muds are able to advertise, the bigger the community gets (ideally) and thats always a good thing.

I also agree that it is a good idea, on the premise that quarantine is an effective measure against infections.

I have to say though that I don't think Mudbytes will be adversely affected by having a seperate promotional section and allowing the practice to go on there, so long as there is never any kind of voting or statistical system that M* owners can use to compete with one another on Mudbytes.

yeah the votes never reflect the quality of the game anyway, only the tenacity of the muds admin/players. if it were to have a rating/ranking/voting setup, i would like it if 3 different people with no ties to that particular mud would review it with an impartial eye and then give it a ranking or something along those lines.

I agree with the no voting/popularity contest sentiment, they are never representative of the true nature of the game and are a source of contention with someone claiming bias or bad voting tactics. MR seemed to have one of those bad vote threads running every other week, certainly not something that is conducive to the open atmosphere that we enjoy here.

@Igabod, what is your Avatar, every time i look at it i am reminded of leaf stomata.

I don't know if stepping up the promotional side of things is where we really want to go. A lot of stuff is happening at a pretty fast pace with MudRage now out of the picture. Personally I don't think sacrificing even more space on the main page is going to be all that helpful if we're talking just about posts. Even if it's a dedicated module to pull stuff just from the promos forum. The promo forum is too free-form to really be of much use that way.

Remember, we have a mudlisting section here. There may be some stuff we can add to that, but it already provided free banner rotations for anyone who submits a banner and there's already a sizable list that's laid out more or less like the code section. We could I guess add a random mud link or something that would give a bit of expansion on the listing area. Maybe sacrifice some space in the center of the main page and put a box there to hold a random selected MUD and display its description?

What I would personally not like to see are more voting lists. I think it's been pretty clearly established that they end up dominated either by vote poisoners or by large commercial games. They also tend to lead to a lot of bitterness and flamewars and I for one don't want to see more of that at this point.

I agree with the idea of independant reviewing of muds as opposed to a voting system so long as its objective. I'm new here  so I can't speak much of the sitaution here in terms of moderators but that is whom the reviewing should be done (As generally moderator = objectiveness in an ideal world). This would invariably create more of a work load for the moderators though.

i would actually suggest selecting a group of maybe 5 or 6 volunteers from the mudbytes community that fit certain qualifications for the reviews leaving the moderators to do their own thing with no side-track. it may not be feasible but that would be the ideal situation in my opinion. but barring the independant review, we could maybe do what samson suggested with a randomly selected mud (from the mud-list) being a featured mud of the day(or week). there are probably other great ideas that would take up minimal front-page space but i've only gotten 3 hours sleep in the past 2 days so my creative juices aren't quite flowing at the moment.

I will never support a voting system, this has always been MUDBytes policy and I don't think that will change.

As for reviewing, honestly.. I'm against it. Maybe its just me, but I don't trust reviewers, and I can't think of anyone right now who would be appropiate as a reviewer.
