TO: Anyone using MacMERC 2.2.1 FROM: The guy that did it, John Daub RE: Updates to MacMERC DATE: February 22, 1995 Well, I do hope that you got this file and read it before you ftp'ed MacMERC 221...might save you some problems and trouble :) Regardless, this note is to act as a suppliment to the README's in the MacMERC archive...i don't have the time to pull the archive down, re-archive things, and then hope ftp site admins can do the rest. The purpose of this is to let you know what's currently up with and not up with MacMERC. First, I have a new email address...I graduated from James Madison Univ. and am now at Texas A&M University working on my Masters Degree. You will no longer be able to reach me at stu_jcdaub@vax1.acs.jmu.edu that account is gone. My new address is: hsoi@tamu.edu I'll be there until May of 1996 (depending on graduation) :) After that, i dunno..i guess by then it'll be time for me to write a new README note like this again. Additionally, a lot with MacMERC that I wanted to do, i just can't do. I wanted to make it a fully running diku server that could run on a Macintosh. Well, I don't know if that will ever happen. I'm sure it can be done, but with grad school and my current plans for after school, I don't have the time to work on it. However, there's been a big desire for Macintosh mudding stuff on the net...clients, area editors, servers. There's stuff out there (MUDDweller, MacMud), but they don't really serve the diku comminity that much. I'd like to change that....I'm hoping that this summer I'll have the time to get a diku area editor working for the Macintosh, and maybe a client program. But again, time is the thing I lack. As for other things dealing with MacMERC, I really don't support it anymore...I just don't have the time. However, if you do have questions or whatever, I'm always willing to help out or answer questions, tell you war stories, or whatever :) I just don't have the time anymroe to devote to it. Also, if you're interested, MERC is sorta dead...MERC Industries disolved soon after the 2.2 release came out. Some of the MERC folk started to work on EnvyMUD. It took MERC 2.2, cleaned it up, added a lot, etc etc. I did a Macintosh port of Envy also. You can find the original Envy 1.0 source and the MacEnvy 1.0 (source and double-clickable app) at: ftp.atinc.com i think in the /pub/mud/server directory. Also, I think that the Envy 1.0 (but i dunno about MacEnvy) source can be found at ftp://io.com/pub/mud/server something like that. If Envy 2.0 is released, I'll port it...why not. Though as of this writing, the situation with Envy is up in the air....they lost their site, got another (torment.isca.uiowa.edu), lost it, and are currently working on another. It should be up and around, check your favorite mudlist (or rec.games.mud.diku for more info). All in all, I hope this gives MacMERC users an update as to what's up with it (new email for me, hsoi@tamu.edu; i'm no longer dealing with it that much; other projects in the works; etc.) If you've done something with MacMERC, lemme know, i'd be interested to know what you've done. As for my other projects, I know there is a calling for Macintosh diku stuff and I do hope to work on it. Please, don't swamp my INBOX with email showing interest and support or asking when it'll happen...it might never happen if i don't find the time or if someone else doesn't do it. But, if you're working on this sort of thing (client, editor), lemme know. Any other questions, comments, etc, whatever, email me :) Take care. John Daub (aka. Hsoi)
